Buy Tor Now

While I have been travelling, talking, touring, reading, writing, editing, and listening to great music these past few weeks, Puppygate has continued to fester, growing ever uglier.

In one of the more recent developments, the Rabid Puppies and some of their allies and fellow travellers have declared a boycott of Tor Books. I say "Rabid" here because Beale is backing the boycott, while Larry Correia says the Sad Puppies are not boycotting anyone... though Correia and some of the other Sads certainly seem deeply sympathetic to the boycott.

I am not, needless to say. Neither is most of fandom.

Which makes this a perfect time to BUY SOME TOR BOOKS!!

You can do that at your local bookstore, of course, or from your favorite online bookseller. There is an incredible range of great SF and fantasy to choose from in the Tor catalogue. Tor won the "best publisher" award in the recent LOCUS poll, for like the twentieth year in a row; there's really no other publisher in a field with a backlist to compare, whether you are looking for epic fantasy, space opera, military SF, literary SF, Hugo winners, Hugo losers, or what have you.

And, hey, you can even buy some AUTOGRAPHED Tor books by me. My Wild Cards series is published by Tor, as it happens, and we have signed copies of INSIDE STRAIGHT, BUSTED FLUSH, SUICIDE KINGS, FORT FREAK, and LOWBALL available through the Jean Cocteau... along with hardcovers of our award-winning anthology, DANGEROUS WOMEN, also published by Tor. You can find them all at the cinema bookshop, here: http://www.jeancocteaubooks.com/

So if you would like to strike a blow for free speech and decency, and support all the good people at Tor, go ye forth and buy a book today... from the Cocteau, or Amazon, or anywhere... and let your voice be heard. You'll get some damned good reading out of it too.

Slightly off topic but I love the Suicide Kings cover. It reminds me of some of the old heroic pulp magazine covers - like Doc Savage perhaps. Awesome.

Are they paying you to do this? I thought you didn't do advertising in your blog besides your own work.
Jul. 7th, 2015 08:32 pm (UTC)
I recommend books here all the time. And I link to the Jean Cocteau website, for the signed books we have on sale. My own titles, sure, but also books by many of the great authors who have appeared at the theatre: Neil Gaiman, Dennis Lehane, Anne Perry, S.M. Stirling, Junot Diaz, Michael Chabon, Diana Gabaldon, and many more.

Of course, this is a special case. The Tor boycott is an ugly attempt to try and cost some good people their jobs. It needs to be denounced and opposed.

You are a bad, bad man. I'd already bought some Tor books on the day that Beale issued his asinine edict, but obviously I need to go and buy some more.

Of course, this is not in any way an excuse for me to buy yet more books...

I have to admit that before I read the post, I thought you were asking for some multimillionaire to buy the company. ;-) Maybe "buy Tor books" would work better?

At this stage, I'm trying to stick to ebooks - no room, no room! (to paraphrase Harry Harrison) Until I have disposed of some of the stuff on my shelves to second hand shops or fundraising raffles, anyway.

Why are the sad puppies boycotting Tor books? By the way which fantasy titles would you recommend that Tor publishes?
Jul. 8th, 2015 01:27 am (UTC)
It's the Rabid Puppies boycotting Tor, not the Sads. Plus some unaffiliated or semi-affiliated allies.

I will not attempt to explain the whole thing. In a nutshell, a Tor employee categorized the Puppies in a nasty way, some of them got outraged and demanded an apology, an apology was issued, but the Rabids decided that was not enough and now want resignations and firings. (Which they are never going to get, by the way).

Tor has published a lot of great fantasy. Their biggest series in the WHEEL OF TIME book, by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. I also suggest you try the LONG PRICE QUARTET by Daniel Abraham. Both those series are complete.

Holy Cow!

Are they even trying to persuade anybody any more, or are they now only about asserting dominance and voiding their bowels on All Things Good?
Jul. 8th, 2015 05:31 am (UTC)
Impossible to answer that, because the Puppies are not a group per se but a shifting alliance of individuals. Any answer you give, one of them will stand up and say, "I never said that."

To my eye, however, the majority of them have proved that this is mostly about "sticking it to the SJWs" rather than promoting work that they like. They want to tear down rather than build up; the Tor boycott is proof of that.

Puppygate and Journal Policies
Mr. Martin,

You have repeatedly stated that you wish readers to talk about the HBO show (and other related material) on other sites. For this, I thank you. I come here to read about your work and what you are currently working on.

I certainly love to hear about awards and who is nominated for those awards. I am also quite pleased to see posts about your cinema.

However, could you please follow your policy about the HBO show in regards to Puppygate. I (and I am sure many others) don't care.

There are plenty of places for people to talk about Puppygate on the internet. This, I would hope, not be one of them.

At N4G (a gaming site) we decided to no longer run articles about Gamergate because they really weren't related to what the site was intended for: News For (4) Gamers.

This site is about what goes on in writing and it is one of the few places I personally enjoy going to on the internet.

However, of late, Puppygate has garnered far too much attention here and, I am sure, far too much of your time.

I cannot get back the time I have wasted reading posts about whatever this is, but I would love to come to this site and not hear about it.

If I want to hear about it, I can go elsewhere. I am sure it is still on twitter.

Re: Puppygate and Journal Policies
I am sure it is on Twitter as well. However, I am not on Twitter, so this blog is the only place you can read about my thoughts on these issues.

Might I suggest that you simply skip the Puppygate posts? Just today I was also posted about my trip to Europe and the Grateful Dead's final shows in Chicago, posts where nary a word was said about the Puppies or the Hugos.

What did you expect was going to happen after Irene Gallo pretty much called everyone who supported any Hugo slate other than Tor's "Nazis?" Including some Tor authors. She's lucky she still has a job -- most companies would have fired her for insulting their own clients like that. Tor still may, when the magnitude of the boycott hits home.
Jul. 8th, 2015 05:15 pm (UTC)
Irene has apologized and so has Tom. That should have ended things. The outrage is a tempest in a teapot, stirred up by the worst elements of the Puppy movement.

Irene Gallo

Boycott? I guess you could say I was participating in a boycott. I'd say I was simply taking my business elsewhere, since the people working there obviously don't like me and say insulting things about me which are untrue. Why should I do business with people like that?

As for costing them their jobs, I refer you to Brendan Eich. Sauce for the goose & all that.

We're all playing in the heart of gold band.
Good timing. I vowed I'd start no more incomplete series of books, so I just picked up Abercrombies 'Half-a' series. I also got 'Once we were kings' by Ian Alexander, and as a direct result of consuming this blog, Fort Freak. Fort Freak, btw, cost more in digital format than in paper-back. It was seven bucks though, so it's only irritating and not deal-breaking.

I love my fantasy worlds with their evil villains and honorable heroes. However, like Anne Frank, I believe in RL we're all basically good at heart. People like Vox Day test that belief.

My favorite Dead tune is Scarlet Begonias:)

Awesome, an Ambercrombie fan! Last Argument and those are great. May I suggest Glen Cook's the Black Company? I was able to read them straight through and not get fatigued. I am onto Naomi Novik right now and am really liking the Napoleonic Wars with Dragons.

I love you're books George, but this is a case where I honestly view both sides as wrong. I really don't want anyone to lose their job over this, but there's no reason why a professional should ever call someone a Nazi simply because they have a different opinion. I believe in second chances and all, but simple from a professional stand point it's something that is really immature and outright rude.
Jul. 8th, 2015 08:19 pm (UTC)
I don't think it is fair to imply that Correia in any way supports the boycott when he has a public post out there saying this:

"The Sad Puppies campaign isn’t mad at Tor the publishing house. We have nothing against Tor.

In fact, one of our suggestions for novel is by Kevin J. Anderson, and is published by Tor. One of our nominees is John C. Wright, and he is published by Tor. There are other Tor authors who are secret members of the Evil Legion of Evil. And there are some Tor authors and editors who have reached out to us this week, and who have told the angry mobs to calm the hell down and knock off the asinine defamation, both in public and in private.

Don’t threaten to boycott anybody because of their business associations, because that’s exactly the kind of boorish behavior that’s been done to us."

If you have other quotes or material that is more recent that contradicts this I would be interested in seeing it. Thanks!
Jul. 8th, 2015 10:35 pm (UTC)
Try http://monsterhunternation.com/2015/06/18/sad-puppies-are-not-calling-for/

That's a more recent post. Correia says the Sad Puppies are not calling for any boycotts -- then spends the rest of the post praising Peter Grant, who started the boycott, and slagging on Irene Gallo. It is pretty clear where his sympathies lie, and they are not with Tor.

Which is pretty much what I said to start with. The boycott is Rabid Puppy work, not the Sads... but the Sads are not exactly rallying to Tor, and some are lining up with the Rabids.

Hi George, big fan.
I couldn't help but notice you enjoyed yourself some greatful dead these past few days, and I'm pretty sure your title for this post is a Rush reference (yes?). It all got me wondering. who are some of your favourite musical artists?

Rock on.

(I bought the Dangerous Women anthology, fantastic)

'Buy Tor Now' is a Rush reference? Really?

A list of my favorite bands and artists would be very long. Check out the groups I dedicated THE ARMAGEDDON RAG to, for a start.
