Home Alone

Well, not really alone. Parris is here, and my minions, and the Cocteau staff, and the cats... but I am not in San Diego at Comicon, and I have to admit, that feels strange.

Staying home was the right decision. I just got back from Chicago and the Dead shows, and before that it was Europe, and it is hardly as if HBO needed me in San Diego to represent... not with so much of our cast on hand. I have so much work to do, I am way behind on everything, and I have a wedding to attend in Jersey in a few weeks, and worldcon after that... and if truth be told, San Diego has gotten overwhelming in recent years. There are always good times catching up with friends, and hanging with the cast, but it's not as if I can walk the floor anymore and look for old comic books, the way I once did.

Even so... even so... it does make me a little sad, not being there.

Anyway, those of you who are there, be sure and catch THE EXPANSE premiere. I wish I could. Everything I've seen suggests that it will be a terrific show. The books were certainly great. Say hi to Daniel and Ty for me.

You might also visit the Random House booth to buy a calendar, and drop by the Tor/ Macmillan booth to buy a stack of books and show your support.

Hi George - I'm curious, did you ever end up returning to your idea for the novel "Avalon", which you dropped in '91 to begin working on ASOIAF?

Re: Avalon?
Probably not. I've had lots of new ideas since then, things that excite me more just now.

Of course, by the time I finish Ice & Fire, who knows what I will be thinking?

First time post, Mr. Martin. Huge fan, love your work. You've mad fans out here in Pakistan- perhaps not enough to warrant risking your life with a visit (jk, we're actually quite hospitable folk and things are far better than portrayed in mainstream media,) but what we lack in numbers we more then make up for with our passion for your work.

With so many of your fans spread out all across the globe, in disparate (and sometimes, desolate) lands, I was wondering, have you ever considered or undertaken any form of non-traditional engagement with fans in a country where a visit is unlikely or unfeasible? You mentioned in response to an earlier comment you don't do interviews via email, but would you be averse to leveraging technology to make some form of country-specific interaction possible? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Nyways, thank you for the countless hours of ridiculously enjoyable reading (even your blog's made me titter a few times lol.) You deserve all the success that's come your way (even if the fame at times annoys you) and, hopefully, are in line for much more in the future.

I wish you, your family, and staff health, happiness, and prosperity.

The Expanse!
I'm as pumped about The Expanse as I am about Winds of Winter and episode 7.

Who are your favorite Expanse characters? Feel free to count the dead among them.

Can you please talk Gwendoline Christie into playing Bobbie?

Re: The Expanse!
hey! I was scanning through the comments to see if at least ONE other person is as passionate and excited about the Expanse series as I am! LOVE the heck out of it!! It's like crack for sure. And yeah, kinda the way ASOIAF is crack, though they're sister genre's not the same. (sister SyFy to Father Fantasy) I have been audiobooking the series since Ser George turned us onto it and his guy Ty.
I LOVE that idea of Gwendoline C being Bobbie! YES!!! with multi colored dreds would make her perfect for me.

Joss Whedon made fun of you!
He said: Suck it George!

Because one Firefly or Buffy fan said at a panel that he is his favorite author who kills off characters...

I LOVE "The Expanse" book series so I'm really looking forward to seeing what the show is like. I've been dying for some good space opera on TV for far too long (pretty much since BSG ended), and if any series has the potential to fill that void, it's "The Expanse."

Since you're busy plugging away on writing projects at the moment, I'm curious: do you listen to music when you write?

In your shoes, I would find it difficult to write Ironborn chapters without having Wardruna on in the background, but to each their own. :)

Re: Music
No, I don't. I am not a multi-tasker. When I listen to music, I listen to music, I don't use it as background to anything else.

(Well, except driving a car. I do listen to music when I drive).

On your appearance list it says that your appearance at worldcon is canceled, but you listed it above. Does this mean that you will be attending after all?

Re: worldcon
It is the World Fantasy Convention that I have cancelled (only for myself, of course).

You are confusing that with the World Science Fiction Convention.

Two completely different events.

I would imagine it feels strange. It's odd to not "see" you there, too.

Hope everything is coming up roses for you and Parris!

Comic Con greetings from APOIAF
We are sorry that you had to miss Comic Con this year. Hopefully you will be able to attend next year, and with less of a weight on your shoulders in terms of Son of Kong.

Our podcast had a great time this year, we had a blast hosting the Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones fan panel on Saturday. We also got to meet Luis Royo, who I've been a fan of for 15 years. We invited him to our Sat night post panel party, turns out he actually did try to stop by with his translator to the tequila bar but they failed to find us.. maybe next year! It feels weird to be home now without having to get past hundreds of people to cross a street.
