Dunk & Egg Are HERE

Big day, big excitement. It's publication day for A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, with simultaneous hardcover releases scheduled for the US (Bantam Spectra) and the UK (Harper Collins Voyager).

This will be the first collection of the three Dunk & Egg novellas that I have published to date: "The Hedge Knight" (originally published in Robert Silverberg's anthology LEGENDS), "The Sworn Sword" (from LEGENDS II), and "The Mystery Knight" (from the anthology WARRIORS, edited by Gardner Dozois and yours truly). All together in one place for the first time, so you no longer need to track down three separate (and in some cases, out of print) books.

British edition

Depending (of course) on which side of the pond you find yourself, one or the other of the two editions should be available today from your favorite local bookstore or online bookseller.

The American edition is on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Knight-Seven-Kingdoms-Song-Fire/dp/0345533488/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1444154684&sr=1-1

The British edition can be found on Amazon UK at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knight-Seven-Kingdoms-Song-Prequel/dp/0007507674/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1444154759&sr=1-1&keywords=a+knight+of+the+seven+kingdoms

For those of you who have yet to make the acquaintance of Dunk & Egg... these are stories set in Westeros about ninety years before the opening of A GAME OF THRONES, when the Targaryens still sat the Iron Throne.. They chronicle the adventures of the hedge knight called Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg as they travel across the Seven Kingdoms.

And yes, before those of you from other lands across the sea speak up, it is true that the book has already been published in a dozen other languages. That's because we wanted to do something rather special with the English-language editions, but many of my foreign publishers were not willing to wait.

For those who did wait, however, the "extra" is ART. Gorgeous, stunning, evocative, lovely illustration. We asked the amazing GARY GIANNI to illustrate the book, and Gary was so taken with the stories that he said he declined to do just the half-dozen pieces we originally asked for, insisting instead that he be allowed to illustrate the entire book. Needless to say, we LOVED the idea. I grew up and was weaned on the illustrated classics of my childhood with art by the likes of Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth, and the prospect of having one of my own books done the same way thrilled me no end.

And here it is, and believe me, it's everything I could have dreamed of. Here's just a sample, to whet your appetites:

Enjoy!

Any Other Compilations in the Works?
Hi George,

Are there any plans to do something similar with "The Princess and the Queen" and "The Rogue Prince"?

Re: Any Other Compilations in the Works?
The versions of both of those currently in print (in DANGEROUS WOMEN and ROGUES, respectively) are severely abridged.

The full versions will eventually be published in FIRE & BLOOD, the Targaryen history I want to finish at some point. Whether that will be illustrated remains to be seen.

But first I need to finish WINDS OF WINTER and DREAM OF SPRING, and maybe some more Dunk & Egg as well.

Re: Any Other Compilations in the Works?
Hi George, do we have any news on the graphic novel of The Mystery Knight? I know it's been mentioned in the past but there's not been any news on that for a while. I love my copies of the existing Dunk and Egg graphic novels (the first one is VERY worn after all these years!)

May I also suggest that The Princess and the Queen and The Rogue Prince would be perfect for the graphic novel format, in case the publishers read this page. I know I can't be the only one who would love to see that happen. Team Rhaenyra :)

Princess and the Queen was fantastic. You're telling us it was ABRIDGED? Looking forward to the whole of it then.

Excited to pick up Dunk & Egg today. Congrats and thank you for your work, you wonderful bastard.

Re: Any Other Compilations in the Works?
I've had "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" on pre-order since it was originally supposed to be published last fall, so I'm looking forward to reading my copy that came in today.

Definitely looking forward to "Winds", "Dream", and more Dunk and Egg (hopefully collected and illustrated in a similar fashion as this first installment).

And of course, other tales from The Seven Kingdoms, whether they appear in anthologies or their own covers.

Sweet! That's the first I've heard of FIRE & BLOOD. I'm probably a little too excited to get home to my preordered copy of a book I've already read, but alas, I love your writing and your storytelling. I'm very intrigued by Bloodraven and can't wait to see how future Dunk and Egg tales become further entwined with ASOIAF. Keep it coming!

Re: Any Other Compilations in the Works?
Yes, Yes, and YES!

I think the Dung and Egg material is becoming my favorite. I cannot read much of ASOIAF with my son, but Dunk and Egg are very kid friendly and he absolutely loves the first two. It will be so nice to have all three together....can wait until I get off work to go get my reserved copy.

BTW, will The Mystery Knight be re-issued soon as well, I would like to complete my individual set as well...

George - please make sure you show how Dunk turned into Coldhands. I am quite curious about that.

Excited for all of your upcoming works! As of now, do you plan to cover the Targaryens while they still lived in Valyria?
