My Position On the Syrian Refugees

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Those words, of course, are by Emma Lazarus. Her poem, "The New Colossus," appears in bronze on the base of the Statue of Liberty. A statue given to the United States by France, our nation's oldest friend and ally... a bit of history that seems especially important just now, in light of the recent horrors in Paris.

For me, Lady Liberty and the words on her base represent the best of what this nation of immigrants is all about. One has to wonder if all the governors (including our own governor here in New Mexico, I am ashamed to say) and congressmen voting to keep out the Syrian refugees have ever visited the Statue, or read the words on her base. If so, they surely failed to understand them.

Of course, most everyone knows the part about 'your tired, your poor, your huddled masses,' but let me draw your attention to some other lines of the poem:
-- a mighty woman with a torch... her name Mother of Exiles,
-- from her beacon hand, Glows world-wide welcome,
-- send these, the homeless, tempest-tost, to me.

Emma Lazarus had it right. Donald Trump and thirty-one governors have it wrong, wrong, wrong.

The Syrian refugees are as much victims of ISIS as the dead in France.

Let them in. Santa Fe, at least, will welcome them.

Re: Let them stay at your house, George
History has demonstrated many times that immigrants revitalize a society, and create much more than they take. The sort of "they are just a bunch of lazy leeches" sentiment you are expressing here was also directed at the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, the Polish, the Chinese, and many other immigrant groups in the past, all of whom over time have vastly enriched the culture of America. I have no doubt that the same will prove true of the Syrians.

Consider where they are coming from and why. The Paris bombers slipped through with the other "refugees".

ONE Syrian passport, perhaps forged. All of the rest of the killers, if not all, were European nationals. Homegrown, like many of our terrorist mass murderers. You are looking for excuses for your xenophobia. Look instead into your own heart and ask yourself why you are so fearful.

I'd be happy to have a refugee family at my house.

Jihadists don't walk: http://theleveller.org/2015/10/jihadis-dont-walk/

You think ISIS would risk an agent drowning or being mugged and dying on the side of the road?

This sort of talk is exactly what ISIS want. They WANT Western nations to turn on their Muslim populations, so that to those Muslims the only choice is the IS caliphate.

You are giving them victory.

Clearly you did not pay attention to recent news in addition to the lack of attention during history class in school. The "Syrian passport" found near one of the bodies was a fake. You are letting fear dictate your morals. Have some courage.

Breitbart is a website for right wing nut jobs, there was once an article slamming Sesame Street for damaging childrens' morality.

Why the hell are you citing them?

Re: Re: Let them stay at your house, George
Not to mention asking someone to take them into their house is straight hyperbole designed to strawman the argument. To put it in perspective, if every single person in the USA donated $5, great strides would be made on the refugee issue. Implying the kind of lifestyle change you're asking of George is what everyone would have to go through to accommodate refugees is pure sensationalism.

Re: Let them stay at your house, George
You are describing East Asian and European immigrants. East Asia and Europe were, even then, the height of civilization. So, the immigrants they sent us, poor or not, were quite civilized. The same cannot be said of Middle Eastern and African immigrants, who have nearly destroyed their own countries through Islam and now want to spread that barbarism in the west.

Donald Trump is RIGHT. Political correctness be damned, the US needs to remain culturally European.

Dear PresidentTrump:
I am a Mexican who lived in USA with my Mexican wife from 2007 to 2013 and then decided to move to Canada. We both are highly educated, cultured, and awesome. The LEAST of what we contribute to Canada is our share of taxes which are a big nice quantity for we both are well employed, wife is a doctor so she makes way into the six figures. We don't skimp on taxes we don't look for loopholes, we don't lie to pay less. We are proud to pay into a system that with all its faults yearns to take care of its people. We buy local when we can. We read Canadian literature (besides Song of Ice and Fire :) ), we listen to Canadian music, we travel the country and we absorb the culture, all of this while putting in our own personal contribution into it. We are about to have a baby next February who will become a proud Canadian.

You know what, YOUR LOSS.

Best regards,
David Hernandez

Careful... you're showing the confederate war flag in your user image... the symbol for states inside the US that nearly fit to a t your bitter rant about countries that have almost destroyed themselves by acting hateful against their own citizens...
Shall no more (white) citizens of Alabama or Missouri or Louisiana etc... be allowed to move to other states on the ground of this paranoid stance? Shall the other states stop to pay for those who have created their own social problems by heaping abuse upon a sizely portion of their own citizenry?

Oddly enough, that's not what the racists in America said at the time about them.

In fact, as demonstrated by the anti immigrant attitudes depicted in the history of the Five Points of Brooklyn during the US Civil War, non-English immigrant were routinely referred in the same way you refer to those from Africa and the Middle East.

In fact, the anti-Irish immigration attitudes referred to how poorly the Irish took care of themselves, post "Black '47", a "famine" the devastation of which was worsened by ... wait for it, the very British that Americans were praising while complaining about the "lazy Irish".

Odd, the parallels between your modern racism, and that of our past.

Re: Let them stay at your house, George
I'd like to point out, Mr. Biggot, that your statement is not just racist and moronic as the esteemed Mr. Martin points out, but totally erronious. Whilst Europe and China were still in the backwaters of anything vaguely close to a civilization, the first one was blooming in the Middle East. In current Iraq and Syria. Also in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in northern Africa. Even in South America... BEFORE China and Europe had any proper civilization.

I suspect you define yourself a christian. I'm a roman catholic myself, but you're calling all christians for KKK's and WBC's. You're obviously claiming all muslims for barbarians and fundamentalists, but the percentage of those of the Islamic faith who can be put in this category is less than the percentage of christians who can be placed in category with the KKK and WBC, so thus, with your views, we're all as bad on our own side.

IF you want to claim history, you should start by studying it. If you want to generalize, you should know numbers, and if you open your mouth, you should expect that when shit comes out, you get it thrown back in your face.

The biggest winners of your views are the Daesh, since your and Mr. Trumphs views and actions is the continuing of terrorism, one they don't have to sacrifice anything more to obtain.

Oh, by the way, France is taking 30.000 more Syrian refugees, but you, you're a coward who's too afraid...

Re: Let them stay at your house, George
Do you know how Roman Empire fell? They embraced the barbarians and grew too peaceful thanks to Christians' influence. There is a risk of terrorists sneaking in, not even rich muslim countries which are closer to them geographically and in terms of culture and religion take them in (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE...). A country should prioritize its citizens, after all they are the ones who make it great (or not so great). I am from Europe and I can tell you that most of the muslims living here don't asymilate and live on welfare, they don't respect our culture, laws and try to enforce theirs on us. German girls being told they shouldn't wear short skirts because they may offend muslim classmates or muslims protesting because a muslim woman was arrested accused of terrorism is a total BS. Of course this is not true about all muslim people, if they want to asymilate and live here peacefully, they're welcome to but how can we check who they really are and what are their intentions and approach to our culture? We should help them but be smart about it, take in the ones the most needing help (children, people seeking medical help), but taking them in won't solve the problem, ISIS needs to be dealt with and their country rebuilt that's what we should focus on.

Re: Let them stay at your house, George
No comparison between Europeans that came at the turn of the last century and "refugees" from the Islamic world. European immigrants from the last century weren't part of major terrorist attacks that killed and injured hundreds of innocent people, whereas among these "refugees" are those that committed the atrocities in Paris.

You didn't answer the premise of the previous poster's comment. If you are concerned for genuine refugees, than go to the camps in Turkey, Lebanon, or Jordan. Give to charities that aid those at these camps. There are plenty of ways you can actually help. Do this instead of advocating for a policy that puts the security of the United States at risk. Put some of your own skin in the humanitarian game as it were instead of just pontificating and feeling morally superior to those of us who have genuine concerns about safety.
