Jets Soar

Okay, not bad, not bad... the Jets won their third in a row this morning, by the convincing score of 30 - 8. Fitz was solid and efficient at QB, the running game was cooking (especially Chris Ivory), Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker had strong games at wideout, and the defense looked hellacious.

It is enough to give a boy hope.

Of course, it was against the Tennessee Titans, so one cannot read too much into it.

Speaking of the Jets... I never got around to posting about last week, and their overtime win over the Giants. Every four years I face a Sunday like this, when my two teams go head to head. (I hope someday to see them go head to head in a Subway Superbowl, but I am starting to think I will never live that long). When that happens, I basically just root for a good game with no injuries... well, unless one team is in contention and t'other ain't.

Jets/ Giants 2015 was certainly an exciting game, and Gang Green gets props for hanging in when things looked dark... but, really, it was more a case of the Giants losing the game than the Jets winning in. The G-Men had a ten point lead in the fourth quarter, and managed to blow it... as they have in four or five other games this season. Sadly, the Giants D does not seem capable of holding a lead, and while the Giants O can certainly put up points, they don't seem capable of running out the clock to close the deal when that's what is required. They keep trying to pass when all that's needed to win is some good runs to move the chains and eat the minutes.

It does boggle the mind to realize that the Giants could still win the NFC East (though I don't think they will), even with all those fourth quarter collapses. Everybody in the division seems to suck this year. The East champion could well have a losing record. Maybe it will be the G-Men. We'll see how they do against the Fish tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, the Jets are in strong contention for a wild card... but they need to beat the Cowboys on Saturday, since the last two games (against the Pats and Bills) will be tough.

No Redskins update?
George, I feel compelled to mention that I noticed you did not provide any commentary on the Redskins win over the Giants two weeks ago. I only mention it because though I am a fan of your work I am a rival to one of your teams and we do not often get to celebrate a win over the Giants. The East is weak but I do hope the "Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Peoples" win it!

Steelers will probably get the last AFC playoff spot
Right now all the official standings have the Jets in and Steelers out, but people are saying that if the Steelers win out the tiebreakers shift in their favor. Of course if they both lose one game it might be different; most important games for the Jets in that instance will probably be AFC games.

Giants would have ten wins right now...
If games ended after 58 minutes. It's insane how many late leads they've given up.

The NFL is weird this year
Before this week, the Jets could still have gotten the #1 seed in the playoffs, or missed the playoffs and gotten the #2 overall pick in the draft. See discussion here

Do you think the Eagles have a chance against the Cardinals next week?

Well, you certainly don't have to worry about the Giants on MNF this week... *sigh*

Yeah, if only my Titans could actually get in shape as a team. That was rough to watch. So much potential just squandered this year so the losses just hurt that much more. Here's to hopin' your Jets whomp the Pats in two weeks, because it's not like we're gonna do it next week.

Steelers and Chiefs have a better schedule to take out the AFC Wild Cards though.
Not that the G Men schedule is better with games against Carolina and the Vikes.
Maybe your best bet of redemption is a win against an undefeated Carolina.

I often wondered who you would root for in this match-up. While I can't say I'm a Titan fan so much as a Mariota fan (since I'm a Duck fan), I was hoping for a different outcome. Alas.
But hey, the Seahawks are looking better!

Saturday another bye
Yeah, and the following Saturday won't be much of a challenge either, Cowboys look to have packed it in for this year.....

Giants and Coughlin (and a small video for you)
As much as I like the Jets, this was another heart breaking loss for the Giants. Seriously, how many times do we need to fuck up a lead during the last two minutes? Saints, Falcons, Patriots, Jets. Alas, I think there's not a chance anymore for the playoffs. Sure, the NFC East is an absolute dumpster fire but still, the G-Men still have to play Carolina and the Vikings (and the Dolphins, yeah).

So what do you think about Tom Coughlin? He's on the hot seat again. Should he "retire"? No half-time adjustments, no running play, horrible clock management and overall many questionable decisions. I mean, I love that guy but maybe they need a change. Some fresh air, some good picks and we'll see. It's just sad to see players like Eli, JPP and Odell wasting their potential like that. Your opinion?

PS: Sorry, I have to go off-topic for a moment. But I'm part of the asoiaf community on reddit.com and a user wrote a song named The Winds of Winter as like Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence. Another guy then did a cover of it and posted it on YouTube. Had a great laugh and wanted to share it. You need to see this, George!

I'm a Titans fan.....
I'm a lifelong Titans fan, naturally I watched the game yesterday. You are correct in not wanting to read to much into things because our team is wholly decimated with injuries on both sides of the ball. Add to that a patchwork interim coaching staff and you see what I mean. I'm an offensive guy so Brandon Marshall and Chris Ivory are straight up beasts. Fitz is hitting his stride in New York, a lot better than he was in Tennessee.

Todd Bowles
If Todd Bowles somehow gets the Jets in the playoffs, would you be willing to make a reference to his and my alma mater (Temple Owls) in The Winds of Winter? Perhaps a red owl sigil somewhere?

Re: Todd Bowles
I have an owl sigil in there already... House Mertyns, I believe.

As for a reference in WINDS, playoffs would not be enough... but maybe if he makes the Superbowl.

Re: Todd Bowles
Our colors are cherry (red) and white so the House Mertyns's sigil is pretty close... maybe just needs a little blood on it to complete the reference ;). Looks like I'm jumping on the Jets bandwagon!

Our poor Titans. Although I'm in Tennessee I'm not a fan. Perfectly acceptable to discount them, they are past reproach now.

Hoping anyone, any team beats the Pats.

Also, TWOW. 😢
