What's Up, Doc?

"Never play poker with a man called Doc," Nelson Ahlgren once warned.

Guess my poker-playing days are over.

I am very pleased. Thanks to all my friends at A&M.

(When will I be returning to College Station to get the degree? Not till WINDS is done).

Congratulations
Dear Mr. Martin,

Congratulations! I hope you are proud. You should also be proud of WHY you were given this honor. I know, not entirely infrequently, well known people are given honorary degrees for doing little more than giving important talks at the school (commencement ceremonies, important lecture series, etc.). To be honest, if you really wanted to pile-up honorary doctorates, I think you could make it known that you would trade commencement talks for them, and I suspect you would get a fair number of offers.

But there is a world of difference between giving a lecture or two at a school, and making substantive and rare contributions to a unique library collection. The former is cute and fun, the later does truly advance the mission of the school and library.

The honor sounds very, very well deserved.

Congratulations!
