Keep Listening

Work is continuing on our new series of Wild Cards audiobooks. Exciting stuff for Wild Cards fans and audiobook addicts both.

Random House Audio has just finished recording ACES ABROAD, the fourth volume in the series.

We used the expanded edition, with the two new stories we added for the Tor reissue. As with JOKERS WILD (see the post downstream), we did not go with a single reader, but rather cast a different actor for every one of the viewpoint characters, to give the audibooks the same mosaic feel as the print versions. Next best thing to an old-time radio drama!

ACES ABROAD features stories by Stephen Leigh, John J. Miller, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Michael Cassutt, Leanne C. Harper, Edward Bryant, Kevin Andrew Murphy, Gail Gerstner Miller, Walton (Bud) Simons, Lewis Shiner, Carrie Vaughn, Victor Milan, and yours truly. Several stories boasted multiple viewpoints, however, so we wound up using no fewer than eighteen voices.

Our cast:

Xavier Desmond ARMIN SHIMERMAN
Senator Gregg Hartmann CLANCY BROWN
Misha YASMINE BARGHOUTY
Chrysalis SELMA BLAIR
Ti Malice NICHOLAS GUY SMITH
Xbalanque NOEL BEARHEART
Hunapu OZZIE RODRIGUEZ
Troll RICHARD MOLL
Peregrine KATHLEEN TURNER
G.C. Jayewardene SANJIT DE SILVA
Cordelia Chaisson KASEY LANSDALE
Fortunato PRENTICE ONAYEMI
Lady Black DONNABELLA MORTEL
Mackie Messer P.J. OCHLAN
Molniya ADRIAN PAUL
Sara Morgenstern EMILY CARD RANKIN
Dr. Tachyon RAPHAEL SBARGE
Polyakov STEFAN RUDNICKI

It was quite a jigsaw puzzle, with recording taking place over the world, but we think the result will be worth it.

And we're moving right on to DOWN & DIRTY, where a number of the cast members will be reprising their roles.

Wow, that was quick. I didn't know these were moving along so fast. Can't wait till Ace in the Hole, and Dead Mans Hand.

Cordenia or Cordelia? :)
I can't be the first to say this to you, but that cover looks like a buff Shrek in a plain white tee.
Troll predates Shrek by a few years.

Amazing cast! NB: it's Armin Shimerman, not Shimmerman.
This is great news! Wondering if Tuf Voyaging is in the pipeline somewhere.
I'm fairly excited about this. Big Finish does a similar thing with their 'audioplays' and it works well. Heck, if this goes well, maybe even some original material may see this format?
I love listening to audio books when walking, driving, cooking, etc. My favorites are read by James
Marsters (The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.)

If you're not familiar with them, Mr. Martin, you should check them out. Great performance by Marsters! :)
Way to go!
But still waiting for GoT ending... ;)
Sounds good. I've been missing a bit of good radio drama. Congratulations!
What a marvelous cast for the audiobook! And that cover is great.
When can we expect to see something on screen?
Who knows? "Development" sometimes seems to last forever.

The cover art for these books are wild, who chooses them Mr. Martin Sir ? Another Question, did you Sir watch Josh Trank's Fantastic 4 ? I don't know why they hate it so much, it's a 6/10 movie, extra point for the Cronenberg touches and it's 7/10 for me.
Well, the editors and art directors have final authority over choosing cover art, but I weigh in when I can... and I love Michael Komarck's covers, as well as Marc Simonetti's on the Brazilian and French editions.
An impressive line-up. Unfortunately, audiobooks in English don't do it for me, it's not my first language, and I can understand only about 80% of it. Still, it's very cool that all the viewpoint characters have their own readers, and lots of talented folks.

Makes me hunger even more to see Wild Cards on screen.
