See You In Roanoke

Next weekend I will be heading off to MystiCon, in Roanoke, Virginia, where I'll be a Guest of Honor. A new con for me, and a new part of the country (it's been on my schedule since 2013).

They have a website at http://mysticon-va.com/ with a list of all the other guests -- but, alas, it says there that they are sold out, so if you're not signed up, you may be out of luck.

I am looking forward to spending some time with old friends there, and to making some new ones.

Truth be told, I need a good con just about now. I am tired and I am stressed, and I am so so so sick of the toxic rancor that more and more seems to characterize the internet.

So... let's raise a few glasses and have a few laughs at MystiCon, and try to remember why we love science fiction, fandom, and each other.

toxic exhaustion
I hope you get what you're looking for at the con! It's sad to hear you speak of toxic rancor online. I had thought that most people had responded positively to your update? Unless you're referring to something else?

Re: toxic exhaustion
Yes, I am referring to something else. Several something elses, actually. Not everything I comment on has to do with me personally or with WINDS.

Safe travels to the Commonwealth!
When I was last there, I ate at Carlos Brazilian International Cuisine and Mission BBQ. You'll love both places.

I'm so sorry that you feel this way about the Internet. Perhaps my comment is meaningless, but your projects is awesome and I wish you all best.
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:07 pm (UTC)
Enjoy the con George! Don't let the internet get to you.
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:09 pm (UTC)
Well George I hope you have a good time at Mysticon and get a chance to recharge. Roanoke seems like a peaceful area.

Just curious, are you saying you are tired of people complaining about TWOW or is it from other keyboard rumblings? Thanks
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:42 pm (UTC)
No, nothing to do with WINDS.
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:10 pm (UTC)
Enjoy the break! Are you planning on a reading from THE WINDS OF WINTER or from FIRE AND BLOOD at Mysticon?
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:43 pm (UTC)

That's the plan.

The Republican primary is making the internet depressing and toxic.

Re: Internet
The democratic one also has been getting very toxic lately

I think you need time away from the internet. A good old fashion party would help tremendously. Pretend it's 1971 or 1975 or 1977 and make a damn fine time of it sir.

Also, the internet pulls out the Mr. Hyde in many people. I hope you know that you have many fans whom are less vocal and in your corner.

Relax and have fun.

Enjoy a well deserved break, GRRM! Nothing as refreshing as a nice weekend of revelry to recharge the batteries.
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:15 pm (UTC)
You deserve it
Hope you'll enjoy it Sir , and I hope someone uploads it to YouTube .
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:21 pm (UTC)
yeah, my subject says it all pretty much. You have written more amazing and wonderful things, that have enlightened and entertain us, for decades! you deserve a break, and to have some fun! So, please, go have your fun... live your life! But if you dont get around to writing the end of GoT... that's OK..I'll make it up! ;)

Have fun George.
Anonymity affords assholeishness. The unfortunate downside to the Internet.
Feb. 22nd, 2016 08:28 pm (UTC)
You have to ignore the Internet!
Enjoy the trip! Wish I can travel down there.

Enjoy the Con
Enjoy yourself at Mysticon! Too often people forget that their favorite authors, actors, singers, performers, etc. are people with feelings, dreams and goals just like the rest of us. Relax and have some fun, no doubt you could use it.

Oh, and if you are feeling adventurous, and are into that sort of thing, go take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The scenery is beautiful and when I lived in VA while attending Virginia Tech, I found it a welcome break from the fast paced internet life.

Re: Enjoy the Con
I'll echo the drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's an incredibly pleasant scenic drive. A perfect space to gather one's thoughts!

You have yourself a fantastic time George and I totally get what you're feeling. I promise you, I do. I also experienced the toxic scary world of hate via the internet years ago for a reason I won't get into here. Not because it would bore you, quite the contrary, it was a fascinating reveal of human nature, but because it's too intense and detailed to get into. But, I will impart a bit of wisdom I learned from that experience. Which I hope you do not take offense to, because you're probably one of the most wise people I know of! But, alas, like myself you're a person with high integrity, honor, respect for others and all those things we expect most humans to possess. *sigh* please try to remember in the sea of unkind, uncouth and aggressive jerks, there are those few pearls, like us who love you. Genuinely respect you and value you for the man you are and the creative genius you allow us to share with you. I learned to block them. the worst of them are not worth anything more than that. It also makes them furious and then the whole world sees their masks unravel. Big bear hugs and you be you! OMMMMMMMMM remember to relax pet your kitty and every other animal that crosses your path, or even go to the Wolf Sanctuary and put in some Wolf petting time. :)
