Me and Ryan

For all those who can't seem to get enough of me talking... and were not able to make our COLONY event at the Jean Cocteau Cinema... IGN has uploaded a video of my conversation with COLONY's co-creator Ryan Condal.

Have a look... and do check out the show. It's good.

This is kind of off topic but do you think there is any chance we will get funko pops of characters not on the show?
Mar. 4th, 2016 07:35 am (UTC)
No. The Funko-Pop license is an HBO license, so it is based on the series, not on the books.

On the other hand, the Dark Sword license predates the HBO deal, so their miniatures can and will include characters who appear only in the books.

Thanks for clarifying :)

Marvel News
Thoughts on Finn Jones(Ser Loras) landing a role as Daniel Rand/IRON FIST ?

Also, for the coming Marvel CIVIL WAR film.. Whom do you side with? Team Cap or Team Iron Man ?

Re: Marvel News
I never really followed IRON FIST, so I don't know the character.

Finn has done an excellent job as Ser Loras, however.

Since this is pretty close to the topic this seems like a good time to ask. I've never been the biggest fan of sci-fi but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot. Do you have any suggestions(including your own books)to start with? I really enjoyed ASOIAF so something with a similar writing style seems like it would suit me well. Thanks if you respond to this :).

Re: Sci-fi
For my own stuff... if you like short stories, dream DREAMSONGS, my retrospective collection. It has most of my best SF shorts in it.

Other people? Alfred Bester THE STARS MY DESTINATION. Roger Zelazny LORD OF LIGHT. Robert A. Heinlein THE PUPPET MASTERS. Ursula K. Le Guin THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS. Samuel R. Delany NOVA. And Jack Vance. The Demon Prince series (5 books) is amazing.

Mr. Martin, I know you've been asked at length about comparisons between Tolkien fantasy and your own version and you've mentioned that most fantasy has followed the good versus evil characterization; the black and white depiction within a story. What other fantasy writers would you recommend that have added that bit of 'grey' the way you have within ASOIAF, as well as the depth you have secured in your characters, their histories and the world they live in?

Mar. 5th, 2016 08:40 pm (UTC)
Try Daniel Abraham. Patrick Rothfuss. Scott Lynch.

Have you ever considered writing a story where you pour everything in fantasy you are not that fond of, like the dark lord, ultimate good vs ultimate evil, chosen one, magic sword, cursed forest and so on, and adds your own twist on it, just to get it out of the system?
Mar. 7th, 2016 07:02 pm (UTC)

I will. Thank you so much!

Re: Sci-fi
Thanks I appreciate the response, hopefully I will find this new genre interesting, especially if it's anything to the caliber of ASOIAF.
Mar. 4th, 2016 01:03 pm (UTC)
Great interview. I am a fan of Colony as well and hope more people get into it. It has a depth and uniqueness to it that causes you to think as you watch which isn't always available in television shows.
Mar. 4th, 2016 09:13 pm (UTC)
Who in ASOIAF is doctor wierd?

Is Howland Reed Merlin?
Mar. 4th, 2016 11:56 pm (UTC)
wow, those questions were actually quite good. must have been nice to NOT being asked questions like "what´s your favourite character?", right?
Mar. 5th, 2016 10:37 am (UTC)
There are so many books out there (and comics) regarding speculative fiction that would work great as movies or TV-shows that even if Hollywood decided to use only already existing material, there would be enough stuff out there to keep them occupied for decades.

GRRM, you like the DC comics?
Mar. 5th, 2016 08:40 pm (UTC)
Sure... but I liked Marvel more.

Hey George, I wanted to ask a small question about asoiaf, Is the seasons in planetos caused astronomical events or is it magical in nature and also is planetos considered an alternate reality of our earth like its in the same star sytem/galaxy thanks for reading love your work!

Re: Hi
This is fantasy. Think magic.

You've just talked me into reading the 9 Prince's of Amber on those nights where I stakeout a field waiting for someone to spotlight a deer. I also like to picture Rhaegar as Army Hammer, or Channing Tatum and Anna Kendrick as, Lyanna Stark. Katheryn Winnick is also amazing in Vikings, and would make a great Targaryen especially Rhaella.
Mar. 6th, 2016 05:49 am (UTC)
george, sorry for asking this here, but i don't know if there is another place to do it.

my question is very simple, actually. there is something special in the fact that the ghost of high heart mentioned summerhall to arya in her pov of a storm of swords? it's the only time she spoke something about summerhall and she spoke in a angry way to arya, like she had some responsibility for what happened.

i really love all this world that you created, but i confess i have some special feeling for the tales of egg and ser duncan, the tall; and when i read in the world of ice and fire that the lord commander - in that time - had a great role (not in a bad way) in the tragedy, and no one ever spoke about what happened... the more i read all these things, the more i get interested.

thank you and good job ;-)

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
