Hugo Nominees Announced

MidAmericon II has announced the final ballot for the 2016 Hugo Awards. You can find the list here:

It is, to say the least, a mixed bag. A lot of good books and stories, writers and artists... cheek by jowl with some stuff that is considerably less worthy.

I will have more to say when I've had more time to review and digest the ballot.

My Little Pony? Really?
Really? Finalist for the BEST DRAMATIC PRESENTATION (SHORT FORM) (2219 ballots)
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: “The Cutie Map” Parts 1 and 2

There have to be at least 300 SF/F television episodes that are better than this video. How in the world does this get nominated over groundbreaking episodes from PERSON OF INTEREST, THE 100, GOT, or any other SF/F TV series episode from last year.

I think there has got to be a devious backstory to this item getting onto the ballot. It was one of the Puppy suggestions. So, I have a feeling they are using it to make a point of some kind. Oh, well. At least the other four finalists were good choices.

Re: My Little Pony? Really?
There is a backstory. These episodes are about a character who gets separated from a childhood friend because they have different special talents, and in bitter revenge, sets out to magically negate everyone's special talent, until the main characters turn up and eventually show her wrong. So, a pro-diversity plot.

Which they misunderstood as an anti-equality message.

I am not joking. I was lurking in the Puppy nomination threads at the time. I thought that someone had to be trolling them, and they'd never fall for it. Right?

They literally thought that My Little Pony was making an anti-equality point. Yeah. Yeah, I know.

Also they're silly because it wasn't even close to the best episode that season. /s

RE: Re: My Little Pony? Really?
There's an article at the Federalist that explains why the right-libertarian side of the aisle likes the episode:

I'd put it more in the tradition of dystopian stories against totalitarian societies that enforce sameness, such as The Giver. Whether you take a right wing or left wing message from that is largely up to you (just as both left and right wingers will find sympathetic messages in Song of Ice and Fire).

It looks like the sad puppies mean it to be a parable.... I think they are missing the point ( http://www.freshshropshire.org.uk/about-us/equality-and-diversity/equality-of-opportunity/ )

Re: My Little Pony? Really?
Don't talk shit about the ponies. The ponies are a national treasure. I don't care why they are on the ballot. I'm just happy to see them on it.

RE: My Little Pony? Really?
Don't go there. I'm still carrying the scorch marks from when I dissed The Ponies on the SMOFs email list.
