Hugo Nominees Announced

MidAmericon II has announced the final ballot for the 2016 Hugo Awards. You can find the list here:

http://midamericon2.org/home/hugo-awards-and-wsfs/2016-hugo-finalists/

It is, to say the least, a mixed bag. A lot of good books and stories, writers and artists... cheek by jowl with some stuff that is considerably less worthy.

I will have more to say when I've had more time to review and digest the ballot.

Re: My Little Pony? Really?
There is a backstory. These episodes are about a character who gets separated from a childhood friend because they have different special talents, and in bitter revenge, sets out to magically negate everyone's special talent, until the main characters turn up and eventually show her wrong. So, a pro-diversity plot.

Which they misunderstood as an anti-equality message.

I am not joking. I was lurking in the Puppy nomination threads at the time. I thought that someone had to be trolling them, and they'd never fall for it. Right?

Right.

They literally thought that My Little Pony was making an anti-equality point. Yeah. Yeah, I know.

Also they're silly because it wasn't even close to the best episode that season. /s

RE: Re: My Little Pony? Really?
There's an article at the Federalist that explains why the right-libertarian side of the aisle likes the episode:

I'd put it more in the tradition of dystopian stories against totalitarian societies that enforce sameness, such as The Giver. Whether you take a right wing or left wing message from that is largely up to you (just as both left and right wingers will find sympathetic messages in Song of Ice and Fire).
