A Taste of This, A Taste of That

Some of you may not realize that, in addition to my Not A Blog, I also have an actual homepage / website. You can find it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/ Check it out, if you have not visited before. There's lots and lots of content there, all sorts of things to explore.

I must confess, though, I don't update it as often as I should. What can I say? I'm busy.

But today we uploaded a couple of new items that some of you may be interested in: new samples from two forthcoming books.

For all the Wild Cards fans out there, we've got a taste of HIGH STAKES, due out this August. HIGH STAKES is the twenty-third volume in the overall series, and the third and concluding part of the 'Fort Freak' triad. The sample is from the pen of the talented Ian Tregillis, and features Mollie Steunenberg, aka Tesseract. You'll find it at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/wild-cards-excerpt/

((Readers with weak stomachs be warned, HIGH STAKES is our Lovecraftian horror book, and things do get graphic and bloody and... well... horrible. Althought not so much in the sample)).

And... because I know how much bitching I'd get if I offered a new sample from Wild Cards without also doing one from A SONG OF ICE & FIRE... we've also changed the WINDS OF WINTER sample on my wesbite, replacing the Alayne chapter that's been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell. (Some of you may have heard me read this one at cons).

Have a read at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.

And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back... but he's growing, he is, and one day...

Can't help to think the timing of this post and the name dropping of certain Dornish characters correlates to the way the storyline has been handled in a certain tv show. In which case you have my utmost admiration, good Ser. :-)

I really love the "What I'm reading/watching" sections of the website. I know you end up sort of giving us updates on those accounts here at Not a Blog, but I like the way those pages are structured and I think you are an excellent reviewer.

I'm hungry for more after reading this chapter. Arianne's plot and of a certain young boy is my favourite from the start although I think that his quest for crown will end in some tragic way as many times it was in the history, like with Pseudoantoninus (emperor Heliogabal), or with pseudo Michael VII Doukas (associated with Robert Guiscard), or with supposed Jean I of France (Giannino Baglioni) or with Dimitriad and so and so.

Re: Typos!
Chains also may have been renamed "Chain" here. I had to look this up, but in the Appendix in Dance, "Chains" and "Young John Mudd" are both listed together in the Golden Company section. I believe it was also "Chains" when this was previously read aloud, so it may just be something when it was posted. Though I wonder, is it good to have fans that point out every little thing?

Speaking of Arianne...
... when I last heard you reading the first Arianne chapter in TWoW the chapter still contained an apparent inconsistency hopefully somebody else has already pointed out. If not, I'm doing it now. You tell the back story of Prince Oberyn's issues with the Yronwoods in that chapter. Following Arianne's memory of that you continue:

'Blood feud and rebellion would surely have followed Lord Edgar’s death, had not her father [i.e. Prince Doran Martell] acted at once.'

Prince Doran could not have been the Prince of Dorne who reacted to this mess because when Prince Oberyn was a young man and killed Lord Edgar Yronwood with that allegedly poisoned blade Doran and Oberyn's mother - the elusive and as of yet still nameless Princess of Dorne - would have still ruled Dorne.

Therefore it would have been Arianne's grandmother who 'acted at once', not her father - although it is of course possible that Doran's mother was advised by Doran how best to deal with that crisis. That could be a great opportunity to finally reveal the name of Doran's mother - a lot of people want to know that and wonder whether one of the Sand Snakes was actually named after her.
The later decision to foster Prince Quentyn with Lord Anders Yronwood would of course have been Doran's own decision considering that it was only made after his mother's death.

Re: Speaking of Arianne...
No... pretty sure that Prince Doran is MUCH older than Oberyn... and that their mother died when Oberyn was young.... Plus... he still would have been referred to as prince Doran... what does it matter if he was "the" prince or just a prince... he solved the problem... Leave GRRM alone... He has a monkey to slay... lol

It's great to have a new chapter of TWOW,and to hear a small update from you.The news based on rumours on the internet are quite annoying,so I have learnt to believe only what you write here, yet those occasions are rare :/
