A Taste of This, A Taste of That

Some of you may not realize that, in addition to my Not A Blog, I also have an actual homepage / website. You can find it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/ Check it out, if you have not visited before. There's lots and lots of content there, all sorts of things to explore.

I must confess, though, I don't update it as often as I should. What can I say? I'm busy.

But today we uploaded a couple of new items that some of you may be interested in: new samples from two forthcoming books.

For all the Wild Cards fans out there, we've got a taste of HIGH STAKES, due out this August. HIGH STAKES is the twenty-third volume in the overall series, and the third and concluding part of the 'Fort Freak' triad. The sample is from the pen of the talented Ian Tregillis, and features Mollie Steunenberg, aka Tesseract. You'll find it at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/wild-cards-excerpt/

((Readers with weak stomachs be warned, HIGH STAKES is our Lovecraftian horror book, and things do get graphic and bloody and... well... horrible. Althought not so much in the sample)).

And... because I know how much bitching I'd get if I offered a new sample from Wild Cards without also doing one from A SONG OF ICE & FIRE... we've also changed the WINDS OF WINTER sample on my wesbite, replacing the Alayne chapter that's been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell. (Some of you may have heard me read this one at cons).

Have a read at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.

And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back... but he's growing, he is, and one day...

I love that WoW chapter so much! Mmm, that fix should keep me going for awhile with some mad tinfoil theories. Thank you GRRM! I'm excited to meet you at Balticon 50 (my birthday present to myself) in 2.5 weeks...

I just submitted my doctoral thesis, 250 pages that maybe 1 person will read! It was agonizing and soul crushing to write. I only have the utmost respect and patience for you, who will write a book a 1000 pages long that millions will read. Also, I hope you enjoy Baltimore when you come here for the con in a few weeks!

Melinda Snodgrass is handling all that. Head over to her blog and ask there.

Highlight Reel
Hey George,

In case you don't get enough, here's some commentary on book vs show:

Now that the show has 'surpassed' the books (Butterfly effect aside), it feels like I'm watching a highlight reel of what is happening in Planetos. In the past, this wasn't a problem because I had already read the books and had all the background context necessary to understand why a character would make a decision. But now that everything is happening in 55 minute increments on screen, it seems like there's a big hole in my story consumption experience. It's definitely not as enjoyable as I thought it would be.

Anyway, take that as a compliment, as that was how it was meant to be delivered. There is no substitution for the quality of work that you do, I'll continue to watch the show, but I am ever excited to continue to read your tale. Thanks for everything!

Chunks of Cheeky Monkey.
Thank you, it's a real treat. I hope that that monkey didn't become just a big burden to you.

Great Chapter
Great chapter George, thank you for sharing. Love the Dowager Mertyns. Characters like Olenna and the Dowager Lady Grantham from Downton are fantastic characters. Liked seeing you give a nod to ladies like that.

This monkey, is it growing so big it will crush you or will it be big enough to live on its own?

I'm so freaking excited over this book!! GoT crushed my hopes of Arthur Dayne pulling a Jon Cottington, and we still don't know why Jaqen H'ghar was in the those Kingslanding dungeons. A man does not simply just get captured

The last time we see Jaqen in the books, a man was posing as Pate in the Citadel. I am not sure we will ever know how he ended up a prisoner from the Black Cells when Arya first met him. Whatever he was trying to do in Kings Landing may not be the same mission he is on at the Citadel. It well be fun to read him interact with Sawmwell though. Cannot wait for this book!!!!

Heraldry
Tiny question: we thought the Golden Company's "symbol" was the golden skulls of their former commanders. This establishes that it's just a solid gold field, unblazoned.

Fansites and wikis had kind of been using a solid gold shield as the symbol of the City Watch, due to the Gold Cloaks. If we were to use a symbol for the City Watch, what would be more appropriate?
