A Taste of This, A Taste of That

Some of you may not realize that, in addition to my Not A Blog, I also have an actual homepage / website. You can find it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/ Check it out, if you have not visited before. There's lots and lots of content there, all sorts of things to explore.

I must confess, though, I don't update it as often as I should. What can I say? I'm busy.

But today we uploaded a couple of new items that some of you may be interested in: new samples from two forthcoming books.

For all the Wild Cards fans out there, we've got a taste of HIGH STAKES, due out this August. HIGH STAKES is the twenty-third volume in the overall series, and the third and concluding part of the 'Fort Freak' triad. The sample is from the pen of the talented Ian Tregillis, and features Mollie Steunenberg, aka Tesseract. You'll find it at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/wild-cards-excerpt/

((Readers with weak stomachs be warned, HIGH STAKES is our Lovecraftian horror book, and things do get graphic and bloody and... well... horrible. Althought not so much in the sample)).

And... because I know how much bitching I'd get if I offered a new sample from Wild Cards without also doing one from A SONG OF ICE & FIRE... we've also changed the WINDS OF WINTER sample on my wesbite, replacing the Alayne chapter that's been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell. (Some of you may have heard me read this one at cons).

Have a read at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.

And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back... but he's growing, he is, and one day...

Dilemma when P.O.V. Characters Meet?
Do you often write the different outcomes of a chapter from both P.O.V. characters who share the same setting? TWOW has so many of them converging, I could understand you wanting to see which is the stronger route to go if you were to see it from the opposite perspective.

Loved the new Arianne chapter btw. Thanks.

Re: Dilemma when P.O.V. Characters Meet?
Not usually.

I did some of that in DANCE when I was struggling with the Meereenese knot, and also in FEAST with those kingsmoot chapters... but elsewise, nah, usually know which POV will work best before I begin.

Thank you, George! Looking forward to the novel and also to more Dunk and Egg when you have time...oh, wait. Well, whichever comes out first, I'll be happy.

Kansas City is going to be my first Worldcon, so I'm quite excited to finally be able to attend.

I have one question. Was Petyr Baelish character in any way inspired by Piero di Medici the Gouty or some other di Medici family member?

From first glance this looks like one of those you read while in Roanoke earlier this year, looking forward to going back through this chapter!

Arthur Dayne Appearance
Hello George, I really enjoyed the chapter and I'm looking forward to the release of The Winds of Winter.

The talk of Darkstar got me thinking about the Sword of the Morning. I've been checking the Wiki's and such and couldn't find an actual description of Arthur Dayne's appearance. I was wondering whether or not we'll eventually get someone stating how he looked or if you'd be kind enough to enlighten me with a reply.

Thank you.

Quick question
I just got through a read of Accursed Kings, which I adored, and was Jon Connington's Aegon at all inspired by Giannino Baglioni?

Great chapter btw. I love Arianne.

I shouldn't admit this, but I rather love how cranky you sound when you talk about work. Of course, you have to take the time you have to take and I would rather see the book in the form that you want it in rather than rushed off to the printers unfinished so it's all good.

Arianne Chapter
Today I feel 5 again waiting to go to the circus. I can't wait to get there, but a cookie a day helped the wait. Thanks for the delicious cookie, it really helps pacify the wait.

May the writing Gods bless you daily!

"...Toadstools festered besides rotting logs. The very air seemed green."

Great paragraph. I could feel the humidity on my face.

Thank you!
I just want to say thank you! I know you are hard at work on the book and I'd rather have a good book in my hand 10 years from now than a crappy one 2 years ago. I'm just sorry B&W turned out to be Lannisters and that some fans don't understand you actually write faster than most fantasy writers. Valar Morghulis!

p.s. It was Coldhands in the study with the lead pipe wasn't it?

It must be such a pleasure that every time you release anything that has to do with ASOIAF the media interprets it as either a sign TWOW is going to be released or that you're sticking it to David and Dan. The internet loves click bate.

Thank you so much for this. I love the chapter. I really appreciate the free samples while we're waiting for TWOW. Good luck with the book, and I hope you're having fun too.
