I'm Number Four

The fourth most powerful writer in Hollywood, that is.

Or so says The Hollywood Reporter: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/hollywoods-25-powerful-authors-2016-931979

I seem to recall dimly that I was number seven a few years ago, so I guess I am getting more powerful by the day. Soon I will rule the world.

Actually, though... I am delighted to see so many of my friends and colleagues on the list this year. They've got Diana Gabaldon at #14, Ernie Cline at #12, Gillian Flynn at #11, Dennis Lehane at #10, Neil Gaiman at #9, and Stephen King at #2. All writers I've published, worked with, hosted at the Jean Cocteau, and just been friends with, for varying lengths of time. All amazing talents, too. As are the other authors on the list, the ones I don't know.

As to how much "power" any writer actually has, however... well, that's another question.

Writers have a lot of power
Writers have a special kind of power: they entertain, they inspire, they motivate, they teach, and in some cases can turn the life of their readers around. To me, that is something very special.

There's always someone else trying to be number one.

Re: Power
With great power comes great responsibility.

(Just stole that line from Ernie Cline. Who stole it from Stan Lee, of course).

Congrats!
Dear Mr Martin,

Congrats and thank you for all the nice moments you have made possible for us, book readers. As for the power, I think you surely have some. You can influence people deeply by what you write on your blog or in your books.

For example, one of our most talented students at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, Jelena Andreja Radaković dedicated huge amount of her time to write her graduation thesis:

"Analysis of fatal outcomes using fault tree method: case study of the Red wedding from Game of Thrones"

Among the best graduation thesis I have seen in few years.

I wanted to ask for a boon, hoping not to annoy you. We all know THE book will be done when it is done, and that you will announce it on your blog. But we are so anxious!

Could you please announce (1st ANNOUNCE) on your blog (whenever you see the time is fine) when will you ANNOUNCE (2nd announce) publication date of tWoW?

Please notice TWO "announce" :o).

It could be even three "announce", you could announce when you will announce when you will announce publication date of tWoW. But I begin to loose track there, and at four or more "announce" it is very easy to loose battle with logic. Two or three "announce" should be enough, and it will surely be good for PR and blog visibility.

Once again, I hope that if you did not like this idea, it at least did not annoy you. And thank you for all the books. A lot of us cannot say it enough.

Best regards,

Mladen Čudanov, Serbia

Congrats!
Wow! Good for you. I am reading the first GOT book....yes, I know it's lame it took me so long. Even better than the TV series. I can see why you are. You are an excellent writer and one the rest of us can certainly learn from. You're quality over quantity personified and I so respect that. I feel the same. I wish I could write faster but care more about the perfect quality that comes out the other side. This is what makes you a powerful writer!

Congratulations!
Although I'm not really sure how is that measurable (I'm guessing earnings? Popularity?) I'm sure you deserve to be on the top five. Yay!

E L James
She's easy to mock, but the best defense of her work that I've heard is this: She got a lot of people who don't usually read to pick up a bunch of books and read books. Reading books isn't a zero-sum game. Just because someone reads one thing doesn't mean that they won't read another thing. This is especially true of writers like James, who is turning millions of non-book readers into book readers. A lot of those people aren't going to stop reading when they finish her last book. They're going to start reading something else. So take heart. Anyone who expands the pool of readers will also expand the number of writers whose books get read.
