Giants Lose

I returned from Mexico last night just in time to watch the amazing WESTWORLD finale, and the Giants - Steelers game, which Parris had TIVO'd for me.

WESTWORLD won, but the G-Men lost. Can't say I was surprised, but I was disappointed. My fears were confirmed: the six game Giants win streak was more an artifact of weak opposition than it was an indication of the strength of Big Blue.

Against a strong team like Pittsburgh, New York's weaknesses were exposed. There's still no run game -- second worst in the league, at present -- and the offensive line is a turnstile. Eli gets no time to throw, they can't open holes for the RBs, and Flowers is still holding on every other play and getting beat on the others. Injuries have not helped. Justin Pugh was a huge loss. That being said, it would help if Eli threw the ball to someone besides Odell from time to time. Victor Cruz was not targeted once.

The defense still looks stout, but injuries there hurt as well. JPP going out was very worrisome. He's desperately needed.

It should also be said that Odell was not wrong in his postgame comments: the officiating was terrible, and very one-sided. The Steeler DBs got away with mugging ODB repeatedly, but that was far from all. The Pittsburgh O-line was holding flagrantly on several big plays from Big Ben, but was never called on it.

Honest officiating would not have made a difference, however. The Steelers would have won anyway. They were the better team yesterday.

These next four games are all tough ones. The Giants need to step it up, or they could very well lose all four.

And here we go...
Spot on analysis. This has been my fear all season. Rarely have the Giants looked like a championship team. That's not to say they can't figure things out in the coming weeks and become more focused but... it's more likely they will reveal who we thought they were the whole time: an okay team beating mediocre teams and losing (except once) to superior teams.

Thank you
I was the guy with the letter in the Q&A session, You Make me the happier fan ever, that moment was amazing, just wanna say thank you for everything, maybe for you was another Signature, but for me, was one of my favorite moment, I hope that you enjoy Guadalajara, and I hope could see you in a near future

George, have you ever been a fantasy guy? OBJ has really helped my team Winterfell Direwolves make it to first place this year.

Officiating Issues All Around
In my opinion, though no one specifically asked for it, officiating has been rough league wide all season. I refer to flagrant issues like when the Steelers D spun Cole Beasley's helmet in a complete 180 without at least a face mask call. Or, for instance, the egregious holding that Richard Sherman did at the end of the Atlanta Seattle game. There are tons of instances (yes even benefiting the teams I like) of significantly bad refereeing throughout this season. I agree that the refs good calls wouldn't have changed the outcome in this specific case but it is sad that in one of the larger/more profitable sports in the world we can't get rule enforcement right. Such is life.

In defense of the folks in the black and white stripes I wouldn't want to have that job. Too high pressure.

Game of Thrones has the Red Wedding. Westworld has Ford's Theatre. It's such a fantastic show.

As a fan of Westworld, I think you may be interested in this (somewhat dry) academic article on what's called the "Simulation Theory" which posits that what we think of as life is really part of an ancestor simulation on a supercomputer of an advanced post-human society. Life really may be science fiction in this Oxford philosopher''s mind. Elon Musk is obsessed with this theory. His ex-wife (a Westworld actress) forbade him from talking about it in the hot tub. http://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html

It ain't over yet, we're still wildcards! GO BIG BLUE (just no more losses please)!

As a Bengals fan
I can tell you this is a common complaint. The Steelers always get away with holding. The color of their jersey is their greatest asset. Not one time have I ever heard of the Steelers being on the short end of the officiating stick.

Speaking of Westworld... what did you think of the finale? Someone on reddit had a fake GRRM quote of "Man, that was some dark sh*t." which was pretty hilarious.... someone else called it the "Rains of Sweetwater". :)

Miserable game
Losing JPP was pretty bad. Hankins coming out is what bothered me more. I am not even sure if Hankins came back into the game. One thing that is especially obvious is how we can't rely on OBJ to save us when we're down. Eli forced the ball to him too many times with limited success. We should have spread the ball around more.

Is there any hope for the Giants?
What do you think is holding the Giants back, and what do suggest the Giants do to get back on track?

Re: Is there any hope for the Giants?
I think my original post made it clear what is holding them back: the offensive line. Eric Flowers needs technique to match his talent, and Justin Pugh needs to get healthy, and adding a new blue chip lineman in next year's draft would not hurt either.

RE: Re: Is there any hope for the Giants?
Oline often underrated and under appreciated bit often complained about. It took the packers like 15 years to draft an offensive linemen higher in the draft lol

Did you ever meet Michael Crichton?
He seemed like an interesting renaissance man. Author, director, producer, screenwriter, M.D. from Harvard Medical School.

when you feel as though you're seeing things
It may just be a weird week, because the Bears actually won! We won't look a gift horse in the mouth by saying anything like SF looked as though they never play in the snow of course -sportscasters are excited because da Bears had their THIRD win!! Dismal...

WestWorld was a lot better, though...was I seeing things on the beach when I really think I saw another Ford watching himself from the audience in one shot and being gone soon after? I watched it 3 times last night & I swear he's sitting between the woman in the wine red dress with the moustchioed man & the black woman in the dark dress a little further right-just for one short shot. Anthony Hopkins being my favorite actor, wishful thinking may be to blame, but I immediately thought, "How is he watching himself?" I guess we'll have to wait and see...

You usually wait until after the Jets game to write your football post, but I'm guessing writing about both of these games in a single post would be similar to writing The Red Wedding.

Any way you can put your thesis online when all is completed?

You should pick up 2 wins out of 4 which will be good enough for a WC.

Tony Romo to the Jets?
While I don't think that Tony Romo is a long-term solution for the Jets, he is a pretty good QB and could help mentor an up-and-coming QB for several years while starting under center.

Since Fitz is probably gone at the end of the season and Geno Smith is likely counted as a loss, do you think that Romo would be good to step into the role and possibly serve as a mentor for Petty, Hackenberg or some other young quarterback?

Re: Tony Romo to the Jets?
No, I think Romo would be a horrible mistake for the Jets. He is good when healthy, but he is too old and too fragile and would never last the season. The role of "mentor" is overrated. That's what the coaches are for.

The Jets have made this sort of mistake before, bringing in Brett Favre after his first (or second?) retirement. They got nothing from it, and would have done better to stay with Chad Pennington.

They need to look to the future, and find out what they have in Petty and Hackenberg. If neither is the answer, go to the draft,

Well, looks like I was wrong about McAdoo (at least thus far). I was also really throwing Reece under the bus but it seems like he did a nice job in building a defense through free agency.

The Giants have a tough schedule ahead and are going to have to fight to get in the playoffs, but I think no matter what my expectations have been exceeded for the season. I thought the Giants would be a mess. Of course I was also venting some of my rage at not having signed Chip Kelly (hee hee).

Hope you had a good time in Mexico
Hi Mr. Martin.

I hope you had a good time in my home country, I was really sad I couldn´t make to Guadalajara.
Me and my friends we have an annual bet, we all support different teams (Bengals, Giants, Dolphins, Eagles and myself support the all mighty Detroit Lions), the team with the worst record at the end of the season pays a very expensive meal in a very expensive restaurant for the other 4. So whenever a Lions divisional opponent faces one of my friend´s teams I never know who to cheer. Giants and Lions have a game soon, so, not personal, but I hope Lions win.

Once again, I hope you had a great time down in Mexico and thanks for all your hard work. I just read the Armageddon Rag and had a good time doing it.
