The Big Six-Oh

Yes, it's true. I was born on September 20, 1948. Which means that today I reach the big six-oh. I know, I know, sixty is the new forty. Somehow it still feels like the old sixty. Dare I eat a peach?

"It beats the alternative," I hear people saying. People always say that when one complains about aging and its indignities. These people lack imagination, I say. Clearly they can't be science fiction and fantasy fans. The only way getting old beats the alternative is if the alternative is dying... but after a lifetime of reading SF, I yearn for other alternatives, like eternal youth and health.

Inside, at least, I don't feel all that different than I did at twenty-five. Yesterday I was a young turk, today I seem to have become a grey eminence. That has its good points, of course. But so did being twenty-five.

Ah, well. I shouldn't complain. It's been an interesting ride so far, and I am hoping to continue for another sixty years at least. I've got my health, I'm financially secure, I love my work, I have more readers than I ever dreamed of having, I have great friends both old and new... and of course I have Parris. (I love you, honey). I'm a lucky guy. Hell, the Giants even won the Superbowl.

And now that I'm sixty, I am legally entitled to be a Cranky Old Phart. I've buying myself a cane to shake at people, and learning how to growl, "Hey, you kids, get out of my yard!"

Oooh wow! I didn't know about that! *shocked*
Sixty is quite young (says she who'll turn 40 in some days) nowadays. Gosh! I'm glad for you for being a happy sixty year old, *grins* It's not how old you really are, it's how old you really feel! I'm quite surprised to find myself feeling actually better at nearly 40 than the way I was at 20.

Bon Anniversaire George! (Happy birthday George!)

huh, got to go and growl after some kids... *TRULY!* lol.

Hey there George ~
Just read your last two posts George ~ Happy Birthday ~ Enjoy! ~ One step, one day, closer to the other side - whether it be cessation to all, a whole new world, or a revolving door back to this world.
Either way it's coming for us all/ The dark sirens call - - - Maybe it's a trip into light rather then a lonely silent fall - We shall see. I'm a little younger, 38, so barring an accident or illness you will probably know before me. I would say tell me when you get there but I recollect that didn't work with Houdini and his mother, so I think all gates are closed when the seperation happens.

Anyways, as far as those comments giving you pressure to finish "Dance", like you said you get enough of that from your own editors, and your own mind, I'm sure, so I don't believe there is any need for that !!

And trust me I can't wait to read it myself. That series was my first intro to your books before taking a river trip with a vampire, and journeying with Tuff, etc -- but take you time, my brother. Take your sweet time.

You probably won't even see/read this, but those are my thoughts. It's 8:51 am Sunday the 21st and football doesn't start for an hour so I had a little time. Last weekends games were great, and Monday night's game was a blast. Lets hope for a repeat. Time for more coffee ~ Ciao ~ Jon

A very happy birthday to you! I had another opportunity yesterday in a B & N store to turn a sci-fi/fantasy reader onto Ice & Fire and as always it made me very happy to do so. Cheers from Austin! Go Cowboys ;P

A very happy birthday to my favorite author!

I'm sure with a little practice you will be a great Cranky Old Phart--although, I have to say, shaking the cane at kids is more fun if its actually a *sword* cane. Then, when they get close enough you can brandish it at them menacingly and insist you trained with Zorro.

Happy Birthday George! May the warrior protect you, may the crone guide you, may the mother have pity on you, may the father give you wisdom, may the maid give you happiness, may the smith give you a valyrian pen to scribble magic, and may the stranger leave you alone !

As time passes one must wonder what the future holds. As the days slip by, like grains of sand in an hourglass, my fear about your future grows.

Mr. Martin, I have to profess that this worry is beginning to consume my every thought. A someone who has both parents their sixties am I aware of the frailties that age brings. Sixty is now the new forty, unless you wish to compare it to the forty of was 1600. Sixty is still sixty, an age when my father has gone partially blind in one eye due to a detached cornea, and both of my parents being forced undergo knee surgery which has slowed them considerably.

Are they both working, active, and healthy adults? Yes. But they are by no means as active as they were twenty years ago. There is no reason to assume that a similar fate would befall yourself. However if one of the many ailments that is common with someone of advanced age were to occur, it is my unending fear that it would disrupt your life in such a way that you would set aside this magnum opus.

With that said, a belated happy birthday to you Mr. Martin.

I hope that you had the very happiest of birthdays! And I fully expect you to be able to stay up late with us and out party the bros for many, many years to come. :p Here's hoping that the football scores (spoiler free in case you're sleeping in) today prove a suitable after birthday present!

Cane shaking is fun
I recommend one made of good solid Irish blackthorn. With a big knob on the end.

Best way to get kids out of your yard is to tell them that if they're going to hang out, you're going to give them yardwork to do.

As for eating a peach, do you part your hair behind?

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
