The Big Six-Oh

Yes, it's true. I was born on September 20, 1948. Which means that today I reach the big six-oh. I know, I know, sixty is the new forty. Somehow it still feels like the old sixty. Dare I eat a peach?

"It beats the alternative," I hear people saying. People always say that when one complains about aging and its indignities. These people lack imagination, I say. Clearly they can't be science fiction and fantasy fans. The only way getting old beats the alternative is if the alternative is dying... but after a lifetime of reading SF, I yearn for other alternatives, like eternal youth and health.

Inside, at least, I don't feel all that different than I did at twenty-five. Yesterday I was a young turk, today I seem to have become a grey eminence. That has its good points, of course. But so did being twenty-five.

Ah, well. I shouldn't complain. It's been an interesting ride so far, and I am hoping to continue for another sixty years at least. I've got my health, I'm financially secure, I love my work, I have more readers than I ever dreamed of having, I have great friends both old and new... and of course I have Parris. (I love you, honey). I'm a lucky guy. Hell, the Giants even won the Superbowl.

And now that I'm sixty, I am legally entitled to be a Cranky Old Phart. I've buying myself a cane to shake at people, and learning how to growl, "Hey, you kids, get out of my yard!"

Speaking of being 60
First I love your writing. I finished A Feast for Crows with deep regret becasue I had caught up with the series and have been patiently waiting for the release of the next installment of A Dance with Dragons. I am sure as you stated before you are painfully aware that it is LATE. Lol. Please dont pull a Robert Jordan on us and Croak before you finish.

Happy Birthday! I would like to claim I planned it, but I guess it was pure serendipity but I got married on the 20th. Despite my fears, it was no Red Wedding (thank the gods). I’ve got my lovely Stephanie to keep me company as I get old(er).
One of my first favorite SF/F writers was Piers Anthony. He knows how be a Cranky Old Phart, but he calls himself an Ogre. I love reading his newsletters. He always makes me smile just like your livejournal does.
I’m re-reading ASOIAF, just marveling at how good it is. I even finally got the 3 stooges part in AGOT! Thanks for making me smile. Thanks for keeping me up late at night trying to finish just one more chapter, no, make it just two more, no, well, you get the picture.
Thanks and Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday!
Hope you had a fantastic birthday. Great weekend of football. Can there be any doubt the NFC east is the best division in professional football? I am a Redskins fan. You guys killed us week one. We're looking much better though. The next 2 weeks are going to be very tough for redskins fans. Please join me in rooting for the skins to beat the Cowgirls and the Eagles. Thanks! :D

Happy Name Day
Is it six tens, errr is it sixty.

P.S.---if you don't want the Damn kids playing in your yard.........stake it off with little wooden posts and twine. If that does not work, just run out there and retrieve their ball, and keep it for yourself. After all, it is your name day.

Late B-day wishes
Happy (belated) Birthday!!

I am sorry for jumping in late, I haven't had a chance in the last few days to swing by here and see what's new.

I hope that you had an enjoyable birthday with friends and family.

Wishing you at least another 60 years of health and happiness.

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
