The Big Six-Oh

Yes, it's true. I was born on September 20, 1948. Which means that today I reach the big six-oh. I know, I know, sixty is the new forty. Somehow it still feels like the old sixty. Dare I eat a peach?

"It beats the alternative," I hear people saying. People always say that when one complains about aging and its indignities. These people lack imagination, I say. Clearly they can't be science fiction and fantasy fans. The only way getting old beats the alternative is if the alternative is dying... but after a lifetime of reading SF, I yearn for other alternatives, like eternal youth and health.

Inside, at least, I don't feel all that different than I did at twenty-five. Yesterday I was a young turk, today I seem to have become a grey eminence. That has its good points, of course. But so did being twenty-five.

Ah, well. I shouldn't complain. It's been an interesting ride so far, and I am hoping to continue for another sixty years at least. I've got my health, I'm financially secure, I love my work, I have more readers than I ever dreamed of having, I have great friends both old and new... and of course I have Parris. (I love you, honey). I'm a lucky guy. Hell, the Giants even won the Superbowl.

And now that I'm sixty, I am legally entitled to be a Cranky Old Phart. I've buying myself a cane to shake at people, and learning how to growl, "Hey, you kids, get out of my yard!"

Happy Belated Birthday
Hey George,

Happy Birthday...I hope you had a restful one; although with your schedule, I doubt that this is possible. I just signed up for the LiveJournal today to extend these well-wishes to you.

Your books are amazing and I eagerly await both the next novel and the HBO series (I have my fingers crossed).

You're one of my top five favorite authors along with Tolkien, Hemingway, Irving, and Stevenson. Great company indeed.

Keep up the great work,

My best wishes for the next sixty years! I decided I couldn't wait until 60 to become cranky, so I started years ago, but becoming an Old Phart With Cane is just an awesome privilege, so congratulations.

I cannot imagine you as a Cranky Old Phart. You'll have to leave that for someone else and just accept you are a Dear Sweet Loveable Old Thing.

Gratz on the big 60.

To quote Weird Al, may you eat a lot of brocolli and drink a lot of beer.

May I remind you that Dance is late? (I joke I joke :-D)

Wow Grrm, I told my girlfriend I'll be doing that when I turned 22 a few months ago. I guess I have a very bad perception of age myself. 22 just seemed like an age when I have to stop being a kid, something everyone eventually does. Happy Late Birthday!

Happy late birthday. I would just like for you to know that you are an amazing and talented writer, Whom i admire and strive to compete with... One day at least. The best of luck to you Mr. Martin and here is to another 60 years ! !

Happy Birthday!
You are 60 years old, that is a fact, but being old is just a state of mind.

I refuse to believe (having read as much of your work/blog/etc.) that in the deep cockles of your heart you actually think you are old. I say treat yourself like a fine auto... you are a classic! and all the more desirable for it.

Just had to say, from one person whose birthday is also on the 20th of September to another...

Doesn't our birth month ROCK?!?

Fall has fallen, crisp air abounds. In Georgia, it's a much-anticipated relief from August's humid funk.

And at the age of 37, my grumpiness had been in full swing for two years now-- I hate to think of my cranky factor at sixty. You seem to be handling it smoothly, if I do say so myself. And apparently, I do.

Happy birthday George, and just as an aside~
You write beautifully. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world- it moved me to start writing myself several years ago when I first barreled through your books. So keep up the fantastic work, your skills are divine, and of course cannot be rushed. It comes when it comes. I wait with grumpy anticipation. ;-)

In the meantime, it is a real treat to catch these glimpses into the goings-on of your 'real' life. I appreciate you having this Live Journal, and letting your fans in a little bit. The correlation is clear, of course, between football and King's Landing skirmishes. Thank you for keeping us close! Have a wonderful September...

Happy Birthday!!!!!!

I haven't checked your not-a-blog lately, but I hope you had a happy day. Your books have been very important to me and your football musings aren't bad, either.

Happy (Belated) Birthday! Don't forget the Old Geezer Classic "Slow down, you hoodlums; kids play in the streets in this neighborhood!"

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
