Home Again

Got home from nigh on two weeks in California on Thursday night.

It was a great trip, but damn, I'm tired. No rest for the wicked, however. I don't check email when I travel, so it does tend to pile up and up and up and up. So now I am digging as fast as I can, but there's lots going on here as well. M-M-Max Headroom is in town all week.

Had a great time on the Queen Mary with the Horror Writers. If you've never visited the Queen, you should. Even tied up to a wharf, she puts modern cruise ships to shame. All that wood, all that art deco. The public rooms are just gorgeous. And the good folks at HWA let me present one of their Bram Stoker Awards. Which is not, incidentally, a bust of Bram, but rather a Creepy Little House. Not to be confused with the new World Fantasy Award, which is a Creepy Little Tree.

The last time I visited the Queen, the Spruce Goose was still housed in the giant dome next door. The Goose is long gone, alas, but the dome is still there, cavernous and empty. I kept gazing out at it and thinking, "hmmmm, just think what Meow Wolf could do with that."

After Stokercon, it was on to San Diego. Raised a few sheckles for Clarion with my conversation with Kim Stanley Robinson, which I believe should be turning up on line sometime soon. Spoke to a couple of classes at UCSD as well. The real highlight of the visit, however, was my visit to a high school class which is studying... yes... my books. I was greeted by two pretty young ladies in Kingsguard cloaks, and presented with a lovely raven drawing and a sword with a map of Westeros on it. The kids were really sharp, too. They asked better questions than half of the journalists who interview me.

Then it was back to LA and meetings, meetings, meetings. Some exciting stuff is happening. A lot of it I can't tell you about -- yet -- but the trades have already spilled a few of the beans so I suppose I can acknowledge that, yes, HBO is developing a successor show to GAME OF THRONES, and yes, SyFy may be doing a series based on my novella "Nightflyers." More on all that later. There's lots more too, but the beans remain unspilled on that, so mum's the word... for now.

Oh, and I had a few spare hours in Beverly Hills, so I swung by the B&N at the Grove and signed all their stock of my books. So if you're in the neighborhood and looking for an autographed copy, get there while their supply lasts (and if you're too late, you can meet your signed book needs via mailorder from my own Jean Cocteau).

Sometimes it is nice to get away from the desk. But it's nice to get home as well.

Really exciting! hoping for the Nightflyers adaptation to come through! I'm really loving the Expanse so far, I wanted to thank you for putting up a post about it a while back. It's how I got introduced to the series. Anyway I'm sure they'd do a great job with Nightflyers =) And more secrets to be revealed! Exciting stuff!!

Big Fan =)

HBO GoT Successor/ASoIaF
Glad you had a good trip, and yes, very exciting news about the successor series! Lots of speculation. Just curious, would you be willing to share what POV you've worked on most recently in TWOW? Thanks! :)

Welcome home George! HBO Is at it again, eh? Any hints for the fans about what the successor show might be? I'm hoping for Dunk and Egg here.

I never thought I'd say this but I'd go back to high school to take a class about your books! Too cool.

The questions

Can't stop being curious over the good questions someone who studies your books asked and the answers you gave them.
Have a happy return home!

Great News
That's Amazing George. Any new GOT or ASOIAF related stuff is brilliant. I come on here almost every day to check if there is anything new about TWOW. I'm very excited for the new GOT Show/Movie and happy it doesn't end with just the original show.

Unlike a lot of series, a successor series to GAME OF THRONES doesn't necessarily feel like a sordid attempt to extend a franchise past its due date, since there's so much Planetos history written which comes from far before the series proper.

Still, an awful lot will depend on who will be writing for it. I've found it interesting how many writers seem to have difficulty getting the mood of a SoIaF story right. The Telltale GOT series kinda derailed as it went on because of this, for example.

I'll give it a chance, whatever it is.

Song for Lya!
A song for Lya is amazing, can not wait to see it be done.

Now I would really be happy if I also got to see The Glass Flower and the The Way of Cross and Dragon.

Those are my 3 favorite short stories from George, the entire thousand worlds collection is vastly underrated. So many gems.

question about your writing progression from book 1 to
Hi George,
I have finally begun my long intended task of re reading the ASOIAF books but taking notes this time so I can attempt to unravel some of the many mysteries and sort out some of the various "fan theories" regarding the series. I'm literally only in the second chapter of GOT, and already have multiple highlights and notes in the columns. So I am curious- after writing 5 of the books- were you as meticilulous in writing the fifth book as you were on the first? As you progressed did the writing come easier? And is there as much hidden between the lines in the later books as in the first? Thanks for giving us such a wonderful series! Josh.

Im glad to see that you seem to be in good spirit's of late!

And im even more happy that your self imposed ban on 'cons and other less pertinent time-consuming events seems to have been lifted and all that it hints at!!

In the meantime ill continue working my way through your other works. I just finished Starlady ( was golden boy a telepath, mayhaps?) Nightflyers is up next, so i guess thats good timing

Exciting news
Great news. Game of thrones deserves a successor show. It would be nice if they even make a prequel to game of thrones.

Nightflyers! My brother made me watch it when I was pretty young and it was.. a good amount of disturbing ! Can we bring back Catherine Mary Stewart for at least a cameo ?
By the way. Any news or progress in regards to the rights issue in order to adapt The Skin Trade?

I know this isn't an NFL post but I have always wondered what is your opinion on the Pittsburgh Steelers? You don't really talk about other teams besides you're own that much unless it's the Patriots, which just goes without saying in your case of being a loyal Jets fan. It's always been in the back of my mind though when I read one of your NFL posts. Thanks.

Since we're on the topic of the NFL

Some quotes about the GOAT, Aegon I come again.

" Tom Brady doesn't concern himself with the opinion of sheep!!!"

Tom Brady the second of his name, Lord of the NFL, King of Quarterbacks Both Past and Present, Protector from Goodell, and Greatest of all Time!!!

Welcome back, GRRM! Saw a rumor you are perhaps moving your blogging house? I was delighted to find the GOT Graphic Novel on SALE on Amazon. A new format for me. Keep them coming! Cheers!

Speaking of Spin offs and other Series...
When will Garizan the Mechanical Warrior be coming to our screens?

George, many moons ago I asked if perhaps Roberts Rebellion was something that HBO was working on. Your reply to me then was "unfortunately, no". Seeing as I'm reading that they are currently working on 4 different ideas, I was wondering if you could possibly shed some light on if maybe Roberts Rebellion has found its way into the realm of possibilities.

Sounds like it was an awesome trip! You are definitely one busy person. Funny question, ever sit down with a good sandwich only to look down and see a big eyed dog staring at that sandwich? Little bit of drool around his/her chops. This is the vision that pops into my head as I am reading this blog. That makes you the sandwich holder. This blog is the sandwich. You know what that makes me? Yes, I'm that drooling, big eyed dog! Crumbs! That's all I am going to get for now, crumbs! Can't wait for you to be able to spill the beans on the rest of whatever it is that is mum! 😂

But i like Beans...
Just when you thought that this Worldwide Malware attack was by hacker groups (i.e. anonymous) it turns out it's just your "There's lots more too, but the beans remain unspilled on that, so mum's the word... for now." comment that broke the internet... hahaha

May. 19th, 2017 09:46 pm (UTC)

Good luck

Hello sir, Forgive me if I've posted in the wrong place, but I just wanted to say thank you for explaining to me about the different types of conventions last year. After you explained the difference between the conventions, especially the cons that are geared toward books (not moves and tv) I started searching for one fairly close to me here in SW Florida.
I ended up finding a reading festival down here and took my daughter to it. She was able to meet the author of a series of books she used to read and loved - "Wings of Fire" series, Tui T. Sutherland. Jade's now 13 and has out grown the series, but Ms. Sutherland was very gracious and gave my daughter great suggestions for books to read that are appropriate for her age and interests. It made my daughter's day!!!
So I just wanted to say thank you. You took the time to answer and it helped.

You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed the event.

Cons have been a big part of my life since 1971.
