Something Cool

The Jean Cocteau Cinema is primarily is a movie theatre, to be sure. We also feature various live events: music, comedy, magic, burlesque, and of course author interviews and readings. And we're a bookstore as well, selling autographed copies of the titles from the various writers who have appeared here. If you're a regular reader of the Not A Blog, you know all this. I've talked about all this frequently enough.

One thing you may not know is that we're also an art gallery... well, kinda sorta. We have two walls in our lobby where we display the works of local and visiting artists, changing up every thirty days or so. I haven't talked about that aspect of the JCC nearly as much.

But this month we have something very cool and unusual on our walls, a really stunning display of glass swords by local Santa Fe artist G. Michael Smith.

I might not want to go into battle with a glass sword -- give me Valyrian steel -- but they sure are pretty to look at. Come by and see them in person if you get the chance.

Glass swords
They are beautiful, vivid colors really add to the visual impact. Hard to deduce the size of those things based on pictures you posted. Nice of you to promote local artists.

In Elder Scrolls series of games there are glass swords, and other weapons and armor, conversely they are actually very good.

Now that you mentioned Valyrian steel, is Valyrian steel just the matter of craftsmanship (and pinch of magic craftsmanship) like say Damascus steel or is it special alloy and there is some other physical ingredient added to make it so awesome? Like meteorite ore, or volcanic ore, or dragon bone, or blood, or dragon blood?

"What good is a glass dagger?"

(I can't believe I'm the first one to post that here!)

Beyond Awesome!
My Mom is a glass artist (slumping and fusing) so I know that G. Michael Smith's work is not just beautiful, it is stunning, art accomplished by a person with mad, mad skills. Stunning Talent. Oh, I wish I lived in New Mexico so I could take my mother to see this amazing art work. Thanks for posting.

Distance learning
The swords are beautiful, I will visit the states one day and see this cinema of yours, its a long commute from the southern point of Africa though, like 2000 leagues as the dragon flies i think ilyrio would say? Who knows, that was a guess... George is it unkind to ask for any sort of update on the winds of winter?

Great that there is an art gallery
Beautiful glasswork, and I love the art gallery component of the JCC. Does the gallery ever feature photography, and if so what king of content or themes have been featured?

Sword collections are always cool
Hey there!
I was reminded of an independant comic called "Fathom". In it, Fathom has an enemy named Kiani, and she carries a huge glass sword. This collection brought me right back to that. How I would love to see it. If the artist has a website I'd definitely check it out.
In other news, These talks about subsequent ASOIF series on HBO are intriguing. I've had my hand up for quite awhile in this regard, and it will remain up, because I wish to add my voice to an awesome choir. Should you be so inclined, I would not let you down. In the meantime, I'm
checking out those swords. Cheers!

Character Design Challenge is doing Game of Thrones
Hey George,

Sort of keeping in line with artists creating fantastic things, I thought you and your fans might be interested to know that Character Design Challenge (CDC is a monthly contest where artists submit characters based on a theme) is doing Game of Thrones/ASOIAF.

My favorite one is so far is the skinchanger with an owl. Worth a look!

Thanks for the wonderful writing and editing!
