Hugo Deadline Approaches

For all of you who are members of the Helsinki worldcon... the deadline for casting your Hugo ballot is only five days away.

Voting will end on 15 July 2017 at 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time (2:59am Eastern Daylight Time, 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time, 08:59 in Finland, all on 16 July)

You have to be a member of worldcon to vote. If you are, you should have already received a personalized link to your ballot.

There's some really good stuff up this year, so do be sure to let your voice be heard. The Hugo is the oldest and most prestigious award in SF and fantasy, don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

Lizard Lions
Hi George, off-topic question here, but are the Lizard Lions in the Neck region of Westeros actually crocodiles/alligators or komodo dragons? Thanks for reading!

Hi George, I am interested in attending Worldcon next year. Is it similar to a comic con or is it mainly for writers? Being a first time what activities would you recommend at Worldcon? (since you are a veteran of it).

Re: Worldcon
No, worldcon is not "mainly for writers," though a good many writers attend it. As do editors, artists, agents, and other professionals. But mostly worldcon is for the fans.

It's the oldest SF convention, the original, first held in 1939. Once it was the largest, but these days it is probably not even in the top fifty in terms of attendance. San Diego Comicon draws 150,000 people. Worldcon draws from 3,000 to 10,000, depending on where it is held.

But by being smaller, it also offers you a better chance to see the panels you want, get the autographs you want, and even party with your favorite authors.

Worldcon programming includes comic books and graphic novels, art, television, film, costuming... but it is still mainly a literary con, as it always has been, and its chief focus is mostly on books.

Re: Worldcon
Thanks George. I'm from Chicago, and three years ago, I read your Song of Ice and Fire series for the first time. It was a dark time for my family since my father was in and out of the hospital but ultimately passed away a few days after I finished Storm of Swords. He was a fan of the show and watched it all the way to the end of season 4. All I can say is that your books helped me cope with his death and literally got me back into reading books again. I might be the millionth person to say this to you, but thank you (since I claim to be the millionth do I get a prize??). On worldcon, you sold me on it, hopefully after seeing you, I will leave with a signed copy of Winds? Just kidding, you can't rush art. Words are wind. Thanks again George

Very passionate about the Hugo, aren't you? Year after year, I see your posts about it. Will you have a session with the fans at Worldcon? I'd love to see a new video of you. The last one I saw was your interview with Stephen King.

By the way, rumor has it that you are adopting the novel "Who fears death" for HBO. Is this true? Speculations are running wild in the fandom. Essentially they boil down to this- great! Like GRRM didn't have enough on his plate to distract him from TWOW.

Could you please say what your role will be in this new show? A very active one like writing the scripts or a passive one like financially supporting it.

I think you will delete this comment, probably. But I'd be very grateful if you chose to answer.

Thanks and have a lovely day.

He'll be an executive producer, won't write a single episode until TWOW is done.

Hi George,

I don't go to worldcon and am not a voter, just an interested reader. Did you find any of this years best novel nominees to be particularly great/exciting? and did anything not make the cut that you were a big fan of?

I thought last year's entry in the Expanse, BABYLON'S ASHES, more than deserved a place in Best Novel.

Since the Expanse as a whole got nominated in Best Series, however, I suppose the omission is no big thing. A rocket is a rocket, yes?
(Well, not entirely, but never mind).

Of course, I was really hoping Wild Cards would be nominated in Best Series, but I am hardly objective about that one. Still, you know, thirty years of excellence... that deserved some recognition, in my not so humble opinion... but hey, everybody thinks their own baby is prettiest...

The obelisk gate
It was bloody brilliant, I haven't read the other novels nominated this year, maybe you have a favorite among them, George?

I Might take the boat to Finland from Sweden, I wonder if there are possibilities in the Worldcon for aspiring writers to find potential fans, or maybe, even better: publishers ready to take a risk?

I have never been to a con and this could be a real opportunity, I would obviously have to translate from Swedish to English, I might just have time to get one or two short stories done with a little help from a friend.

Re: The obelisk gate
A lot of networking takes place at worldcon, so, yes, aspiring writers can meet a lot of people there... editors, agents, publishers, other authors... and perhaps those potential fans you speak of.

But whatever you do, don't bring manuscripts to thrust at any editors you may meet. They hate that. (It is a faux pas a lot of newbies make, admittedly).

re: Hugos
When in Long Beach I thanked you for all your help in my Hugo vote. I was one of those who only kept track of the Hugo awards for deciding what I should read in the future. Then the Puppies poo, and I thought to myself, Hey Helsinki is a great city I should go. But I had fun keeping track of what I should nominate. I now read more short stories, notice the art on the covers more and read the Intros to books for the shout outs to the editors. Why all my nominations did not make it, I have at least two in each category that I had nominated make it. I am all set to have a blast in Helsinki.
