Westeros Down Under

Australia is one of my favorite places in the world, particularly the city of Melbourne... and it would seem the Aussies like me too.

Melbourne, as it happens, is adding five new stops to its Metro, and in a fit of jolly Aussie optimism they have asked the public to suggest names for the new stations. And it would seem that names from my books are among the leading contenders:

I have to admit, I am bemused and rather flattered by this. The idea of a Melbourne Metro Station named Winterfell tickles my fancy... though, having been to Australia numerous times, I will assert that winter never really does come down there. Highgarden, the Eyrie, Dorne, Westeros... well, some names are more apt than others, admittedly, but all of them beat Station McStationface, which I fear will be the ultimate victor, given the results of other recent Name That Thing balloting.

Myself, I think they ought to consider naming one of the stops after the late great Aussie country singer Slim Dusty: they could call it The Stop With No Beer.

(I will leave comments open here, but ONLY for discussion of Melbourne's metro stops. All off topic comments will be deleted).

They could named It NO ONE

Hello master,

I think the subway is a place where people move anonymously and, therefore, nobody is a perfect name for a subway station.

Castle Black would seem appropriate given our former convict colony status.

Exotic ASOIAF Names may be more appropriate
It's a pity the more exotic locations don't get more press, when I think of Australia analogs in SOIAF I think more Sothoryos, Ulthos, and Great Moraq... considering how little we know of these places I do often wonder which is more Australia like... either way they also sound super cool and would make for great real life location names... alas, it will not be this time around... though I imagine in the future, perhaps distant perhaps not people will clamor to name planets, moons, and their features after every location from ASOIAF they can find...

Being that it's Melbourne I couldn't resist the suggestion of 'Shadow Baby'/'Stannis' for the sake of the pun, just tell Ser Cortnay to mind the gap.

I also noticed Dany chooses the name of her stopping place in the Red Waste: Vaes Tolorro, which has echoes of Oz

Station names
I generally think that the name should tell you something about where you're getting off the train, so the two CBDs should probably keep their names. I can't see any reason why Domain is called Domain, and Highgarden seems appropriate there, given that the station is adjacent to three different parks. Parkville is by two hospitals and a the University of Melbourne, so The Citadel would work there. Arden is by Arden Street, so the name fits, but it looks like a nexus point for several bus lines and at least one tram line, so I'd go with The Crossroads, with the obligatory Inn located somewhere nearby.

Aussie Metro
If the call it the "Stop With No Beer" no one will ever go there. I certainly would not, would you?

Mad Max
I would be slightly disappointed if there are no stations named for Mad Max.

How about the other way around: If a train station in Westeros was to be named after an Aussie city, what would you name it?

Great name
Station McStationface is awesome! You should use that in one of your books. ;-)

Wow, it's just like Alain de Lille said--all roads lead to Winterfell!

The names
the metro stops from the working class neighborhood should be Astapor, Mereen and Yunkai (?)

I like the idea of using city names from Dorne to name the station. How about Starfall station or Sunspear Station?

Love it!
Found out about this from Daniel Andrews (Victorian Premier) facebook page - I love it!

And sorry George, but winter definitely comes to Melbourne, and Tasmania. It just doesn't come to Sydney or anything north of the southern states' borders! It's been bloody freezing here lately, and back home in Tas, people are snowed in as if they're beyond the Wall.... in the first week of spring.
