Westeros Down Under

Australia is one of my favorite places in the world, particularly the city of Melbourne... and it would seem the Aussies like me too.

Melbourne, as it happens, is adding five new stops to its Metro, and in a fit of jolly Aussie optimism they have asked the public to suggest names for the new stations. And it would seem that names from my books are among the leading contenders:

I have to admit, I am bemused and rather flattered by this. The idea of a Melbourne Metro Station named Winterfell tickles my fancy... though, having been to Australia numerous times, I will assert that winter never really does come down there. Highgarden, the Eyrie, Dorne, Westeros... well, some names are more apt than others, admittedly, but all of them beat Station McStationface, which I fear will be the ultimate victor, given the results of other recent Name That Thing balloting.

Myself, I think they ought to consider naming one of the stops after the late great Aussie country singer Slim Dusty: they could call it The Stop With No Beer.

(I will leave comments open here, but ONLY for discussion of Melbourne's metro stops. All off topic comments will be deleted).

The existing Parliament station could be renamed Kings Landing!

Winterfell Station in Melbourne- YES PLEASE!
As a Melbournian who has lived in Melbourne all of my life, and worked in the CBD commuting by train, I think naming a station Winterfell or any GOT titles will start many conversations, bringing people together from all walks of life, without any whitewalkers needed, which is brilliant. I LOVE IT. Thanks for the entertainment Mr Martin, it's been epic.

I've never been to Australia, but Highgarden would be such a pretty name! :___)

BTW George, Premier Daniel Andrews has referenced your original post, quoted your words and said:

"It seems there's a bit of a movement to name one of Melbourne's five new Metro Tunnel stations 'Winterfell'.
I'm not convinced – but the author of Game of Thrones himself has given it the thumbs up.

Mr Martin, you have until October 22 to have your say in our station naming competition.
Once you've done that, please finish those books."

I know you don't have a Facebook or Twitter presence but perhaps another post referencing the station name?
I'm not sure what else he wants you to say but I want that station name.

Next stop, Winterfell Station
I would love to pull into Highgarden station! How about Volantis, Meereen, Braavos, or Valyria?

It's so refreshing to hear about something positive and fun. These days, it is rare.

As we are approaching the end, and Australia had nothing to do with filming or locations, nor was it part of your histories that then created the 'fake history' we all came to love and wish never ended. As I have such a fear of flying I am never going to see the glorious locations, nor the inspirations that created them. I would in fact start riding the trains on a daily basis just to say I have been to Winterfell today.

You say we dont get Winter, we may not be covered in snow, but I assure you, we know more about winter than those who once resided at High Garden. And I think it should be put out there, Flea Bottom might be a more appropriate name for a station, especially if it ends up near a politicians office.
