From Brazil, With Love

LeYa, my Brazilian publisher, and a small army of my Brazilian readers sent me this video as a birthday greeting:

I don't know what to say. I am astonished. Charmed. Flattered. And maybe just a little bit terrified.

I really do need to make it down to Brazil one of these days.

(And they used one of my favorite songs, too).

Yeah, well, we are many, and you have a large public in here. It seems that people forget how big Brazil is and how we can be passionate. There's something very genuine, very honest about our affection. You can see it in the video. Some people don't know how to pronunciate, but it doesn't matter, they just want to send you a little bit of their emotions, a little bit of gratitude.

Watching this video made me very happy! I'm sure you would be very welcomed here in Brazil. And don't worry, we won't be using masks... probably.

From Brazil, With Love
Hello George, my name is Matheus and I'm Brazilian. I read the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire in 2011 when I was 16 and now with almost 22 I still think daily in his incredibly well-made world with all his fascinating characters. I, like all Brazilians, am glad that you enjoyed the tribute, the amount of hardcore fans there is really impressive. So I want to thank you so much for making me an unconditional fan of your incredible work, thank you for introducing me to your world. I already considered myself a fan of fantasy because of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but now, thanks to his books, I can say that I am a big fan of all that genre. Now I'm studying journalism at university and during that six years I've known your books, my admiration for you as a writer only increases. Anyway, thank you for giving me the opportunity to live the thousand lives that a reader lives.
Sorry if English is bad, I'm using Google Translate. But I had to thank him, George. Thanks for everything

Brazil would love to have you
Hi Mr. Martin :D
I'm another Brazilian Fan, and here to say, it would be lovely to have you here, there is a great con here the name is CCXP Sao Paulo, I'm sure you would love it, the people running it are top notch professionals and the fandom one of a kind.
I'm glad to see you have a (although you may not know them yet) Carol Moreira3 and Mikannn, besides wishing you a happy birthday they are THE ladies spearheading ASOIAF fandom here in Brazil, look up their youtubes even without caption I'm sure you would find the work caring and captivating.

Man, why don't I ever get dozens of people from a foreign country to celebrate my birthday by wearing masks of my face?

Is it too much to ask, Uzbekistan?

I never thought one day I'd be able to send a happy birthday message directly to you, and Leya made that possible. I certainly didn't think it would be posted here, yet here it is (and I must say it made me blush a little). Just want to reiterate what I said there, your work does mean a lot to many of us. Also, your visit is long expected down here, so you may brace yourself for the welcome, it might "terrify" you (in a good way) as well. Regards!

Hey! I appeared twice in this video! Coming down from the bus with my Brasiliana Steampunk t-shirt and singing at the end, kneeling on the right side of the group (I'm the chubby guy in with the black t-shirt and glasses).
Hope you're not scared Martin, because you have no idea what it is to be a famous person in Brazil, you will see some serious passion here.

Happy Birthday
Just want to say that the 2 girls that appear at 01:39 in this video, Carol Moreira and Miriam Castro are spreading the word of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones like nobody else I know.
They make videos every week for more than 2 years now, explaining stuff from the books and show, teaching us a lot about Westeros and Essos history, about lineages and charachters that most people don't know about, and also they talk about some fan theorys, news about the books and about the production of the show. Again, they do this every week! And sometimes more than once a week.
So I'm really proud they got to send you a birthday message, and that you GoT to see it. See what I did there? ahah
Happy birthday from Portugal, and I can't wait for Winds of Winter!
Keep the good work!

Come as you are, but please...
Please, George, give us WoW and come to the next Bienal in Rio! We are a little over the top, I guess, when we like something or someone, we can be very passionate, but in a very warm and welcoming way! Rio is not Santa Fe, it is a mix of sun, mountains and forest, and as hot as Dorne, you might even get inspiration for some new part of earthos! Hope you visit us someday!

Wouldn't it be cool if you were invented to speak at some convention in Brazil, and every single person in the room had a George R.R. Martin mask in front of their face?

Great soundtrack, too! A Dead classic.

Happy Birthday!
Another Brazilian fan here.

I've been reading your books since forever, man. And unlike most fans, I'm not talking about A Song of Ice and Fire only. I love the fantasy/horror/SF/weird fiction you used to write in the 1970s and 1980s. And, above all, I'm a huge fan of Wild Cards.

I really hope you come to Brazil one day.

I met a girl from Brazil in Mexico...
When I was visiting Mexico aboard the train that skirts Copper Canyon, I met a couple of young women from Brazil. When they found out that I was from the United States, one of the first things that they asked me was, "Do you know George R. R. R. Martin?" They added a third "R."

It was so very random. Why would they even think that I would know a famous author? I suppose that the U.S. can be perceived as being smaller than it is to some individuals in other countries. The interesting thing is that I knew of the Ice and Fire books and not the HBO adaptation (*which had just concluded its first season at the time).

NFL comment: Who would have imagined that the Giants would be struggling like this? With OBJ out for the season, I suppose that New York might be looking at the first pick in the draft.
