Season's End

The NFL has wound up its regular season. Both of my teams had miserable years and are out of the playoffs. The Giants managed to win their final game, but thankfully the Colts won too, so the G-Men held on to the second overall pick in the draft. The Jets got crushed by the Pats, as usual.

Big Blue already has a new general manager and will be getting a new coach soon. I want a new Bill Parcells. Though I'd gladly take the old Bill Parcells if someone could coax him out of retirement. As for that draft pick, most of the mocks have the Giants taking a QB... but we still have Eli, and we don't even know what Davis Webb will be yet. I'd prefer to see them trade down for multiple picks, and maybe take that stud running back out of Penn State. Let Eli play another year and bring Webb along before bringing in another QB.

The Jets, on the other hand, should take Baker Mayfield if he's still on the board.

As for the playoffs, I don't much care. In the AFC, I will be rooting for whoever is playing against Evil Little Bill and the Pats. In the NFC, no strong preference, but maybe a slight inclination toward the Saints. Love the city of New Orleans, and Drew Brees has been a class act.

Bad perspectives for Jets...
Hi! Here talks a fan from Spain that became an NFL fan thanks to your posts in your blogspot since quite a few years ago. Sorry for you, I'm a Pats fans, because I am a supporter of the Boston/NE teams in any American sport competition.

I think it's pure daydream to hope that Mayfield will last until the 6th place of the draft. Colts and maybe Giants won't need a QB now (I think Giants could still get him), but even if he refuses to play in the poor Browns, Elway and the Broncos for sure will get Mayfield.

Lamar Jackson sounds great for Jets, though. It's got a Russel Willson vibe.

I would love to hear you talk about what happened to your Giants this year. In August it was supposed to be a top team (in my predictions I thought it may even possible a rematch Superbowl vs Pats), with a strong defense (just look at the names: PP, Vernon, Harrison, DRC...) and an attack with Eli and OBJ can not be bad. What do you think happened to have such a terrible year?

Thanks a lot! I'd really love you to answer me

What do you think of the Jags, George?

No love for Buffalo?
Does the New York connection only extend to New Jersey? ;)
I'm more of a Colts fan but the nearly impossible chance the Bills have would make for one more great chapter in their lore. For them to go the 4 in a row and lose them all to be brought in on luck would make for some interesting football. They have a defense, they have a run game, and any given Sunday anything can happen.

Fly Eagles Fly as High as Honor?
I hope you do not have any strong feeling about the Iggles. I realize they are a division rival to the G-Men, but surely some of your gang green can bleed over into some good feeling for the team from the City of Brotherly Love with a similar color?

Regardless, best to you and your teams in the new year. May they bring you joy. All NYC Superbowl, maybe next year? Best from Jersey.

Rule Change Rumors
I was curious on how you feel the NFL could be improved with any rule changes.

For me, I like the rumors where in the new NFLPA agreement, that they could add a new by-week directly before the Thursday night games. And then with another delay, they could push the Super Bowl until President Day weekend.

Your thoughts?

It was a tough year to be a Colts fan...

While you're rooting against Evil Little Bill, don't forget to root for THE Bills. They haven't been to the post-season since before A Storm of Swords!

I'm always excited when the Saints make it to the playoffs. We were robbed so badly in that game at Atlanta.

I'll start by saying I'm not a Giants fan, so i don't really have the attachment to Eli or the faith in him. I really think he's declining, but agree that he probably has a year or two left.

Giants do need a running back. All of those passing options are wasted if you can't keep the defense honest. I strongly believe they need help at O line. Maybe more than the running back help. Eli ran for his life while the backs ran into walls.

As for the Jets, let Forte go. Get a few decent receivers in there to help out whoever they play at quarterback. I honestly feel like they have a moe solid base than the Giants, right now.

By the way, I'm a Falcons fan. I just want my team to remember how to score. Same talent as last year, much different result. It hasn't been a good first year for Sarkisian, but I hope he'll pick it up. I don't expect to go past this round of the playoffs, though. The Rams are tough this year.

I'm leaning towards the Vikings too. The NFC North REMEMBERS!

Super Bowl
My prediction for the Super Bowl is Steelers against Saints. New Orleans has really been fun watching all season with Brees, their two-headed monster at running back and an improved defense, so you can guess for whom I`ll be rooting.. I like the Bills, too!

Do you play fantasy football, Mr. Martin?

Gonna be Pats vs. Saints.

Think the Falcons will be the only upset this weekend.

Mr Martin, I fully agree with your assessment of the Giants’ current scenario. Personally with the #2 pick I want the to take that “stud rb” from Penn State. Saquon and I are both juniors at PSU and I have gotten to know him over the past three years. Not only is he a once in a generation talent, but he is an even better person. Saquon is without a doubt the most humble and friendly kid I have ever met and I think he would be a great fit in NY. I also agree that the we shouldn’t be looking for a new QB as Eli undoubtedly has another year or two left and I firmly believe the organization thinks of Webb as Eli 2.0. Although I’m not a Jets fan, I would love to a competitor like Baker Mayfield turn that team around.

At least you still have a team. Or even two.

- Sad in San Diego.

since I like Baltimore and my wife is a Seahawks fan, we say that we can now watch the playoffs just for the love of football :)

I feel your pain
My Broncos have had a terrible season as well. I'm really hoping the Patriots don't make it to another Super Bowl...I really thought their dynasty ended after Super Bowl 51 and I hope I was right.

I like the idea of trading down for more picks and more players to fill holes and provide competition. My Redskins have actually been doing a decent job of that post the RG3 debacle and its yielded some great players. Unfortunately, the mess with Kirk's contract means we are likely back to square one on the franchise QB front.

Since I've lived in Charlotte for many years, I've got to pull for the Panthers, but I would also be happy to see the Rams do well. Don't really like the owner, but Sean McVay (formerly with the skins) has been a revelation as a Head Coach. Lastly, the Vikings are an intriguing story this year so they're 3rd.

On the AFC side, I share an alma mater with the head coach so I'm pulling for the Steelers with a sentimental cheer for the Bills as well.

Happy New Year George. I hope you have a great 2018!

Even as a Bears fan, I think it would be pretty cool to see the Vikings finally get a Super Bowl win and in their own stadium no less.

NFL Playoffs
Such a shame that Carson Wentz tore his ACL right before the playoffs. Philadelphia can not have nice things.
Jan. 6th, 2018 12:54 am (UTC)
All right, be honest. Are you going to forgive Bill Belichick and welcome him as the new coach of NY Giants, if he leaves the patriots to coach the Giants as some of the NY tabloids are reporting because of the supposed split between Brady/Kraft on the one hand and Bill B on the other.

Not going to happen.
