The flood of support I have received in the last day has been overwhelming.

More than four hundred comments on the DWD posting, and more every time I glance at it. I can hardly keep up with the unscreening. (My assistant, Ty, who normally handles that for me, has been out the last two days, sick with the same wretched flu that laid Parris low for a week and a half). Almost as many emails pouring in. By rough count, at least 99% of the messages are generous, understanding, supportive, and heartening.

There's no way I can possibly answer all of them. It's all I can do to read them.

But I do appreciate them, and I want every one to know that.

And, no, please, have no fear, there was never any danger that I would be so discouraged by the comments of trolls, critics, and detractors that I would stop work on the book. I am still pounding my head against that bloody keyboard daily. Today it was in service of... ah, no, you're not supposed to know about that POV character yet. (Though I have hinted).

I also spent part of the day on email correspondence with a WARRIORS author about his story, talked to my editor and an artist about the ICE & FIRE concordance, traded some messages regarding developments on the HBO pilot, accepted an offer for that old issue of AMAZING I was looking for, paid my phone bill, and watched an episode of ER and one of MONK that I had TIVO'd earlier. That's a pretty typical day, actually. I work on DANCE, but not to the exclusion of all else.

But I digress.

The main point of this is just to say thanks.

Yes, there are some dolts and loonies out there. But by and large, I have the best fans in the world.

(And who knew so many of them were Rick Nelson fans?)

I have to admit to having been one of the loonies earlier this year. I dislocated my knee this week and I decided to start re-reading the series just for shits and giggles. I'm on Clash of Kings now and I have to apologize.

Given how you'll be giving us a few more books than originally attended, I'm grateful! And, I can definitely see how painful and tedious it must be to grapple with the unbelievably intricate plot lines. Good luck :)

Hey hey!
That's just how we roll! ;)

Honestly, being able to share more insight into your life as an author has changed my appreciation for it a little bit -- in a good way.

WOO HBO Pilot!

Personally, I'm more likely to give you gruff for being a New York football fan! Haha. Giants in 2010? :P

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better. I think it's fair to say that you have more patient understanding fans than cantankerous fire-breathing trolls who are merely obsessed with a single aspect of your work.

Thats great George!
Its too bad that on occasion the vocal minority of asshats have to act up.

That's nice to hear George. Like racebannon42 said, sometime the vocal minority can get a little overwhelming. But us fans love your work, and we appreciate that you even take the time to talk to your fans in this format, something that I wish more authors would do.

Best wishes! :)

I've been unscreening from here at home every chance I get.

Re: Hey!
Bravo! You're doing a heck of a job, Assistant Ty!

My jaw dropped when I read your earlier post. I'm so sorry you have to deal with jerks like that.

If you were to happen upon (quite innocently of course) the addresses of the trolls and detractors, I would be happy to go and poun... I mean explain things to them. Keep up the good work!
P.S. I have not read a whole lot of the wild cards yet, but what I have read, I love!

I do 3 to 4 improv shows a week. One of the goals of the people I perform with is to try and make our characers as real as possible... to make the relationships b/w them palpable and honest. Your writing is a constant source of inspiration, and an affirmation that one person truly can have a wellspring of limitless people and characters within them. Thank you for having the stamina to keep fighting the good fight.

A belated thank you to add to the pile, from someone who appreciates everything you're working on (I've always loved Wild Cards since they first came out). And a special thanks for Garden Party - I'd forgotten how much I loved that song.
Keep writing, and doing everything else you enjoy, too. Life is for living.

I think sometimes the negative ones tend to be the loudest - I at least love your books but am content to wait in patient anticipation for ADWD (whenever it's ready). Not much to say, usually!
I'm glad you're so cool about handling people though. Sometimes creators tend to pay too much attention to that 1% and it gets a little disheartening for the supportive fans, but not you :)

Keep up the good work!

I am glad that those of us who are positive drowned out the negative. I personally enjoy knowing the little details about you. I would have pegged you as a Lost or Fringe fan, more than Monk or ER, hee.

Just wanted to say thanks for putting up with the crap that sometimes gets thrown at author's and good luck with the writing. And thanks for doing what you do :)

probably not as many dolts and looneys..
as there are pimply faced, badly raised 14 year-olds. The days of the hickory switch are gone, but not forgot. Just keep hammering and telling yourself it'll all be over all too soon.
