Calendar Cancelled

I regret to announce that Michael Kaluta will not be illustrating the 2010 Ice & Fire calendar for DB Productions. I've seen some of the work Mike had done on the calendar to date, and it was gorgeous... but he's pulled out, and his reasons for doing so are good and sufficient. I am in complete support of his decision to wash his hands of this, and regret all the problems that his involvement in this project has caused him.

I have reached the end of my patience as well. I have instructed my agent to ask the Dabel Brothers for an immediate termination of our contract.

Unless another publisher suddenly hoves into sight, the problem-plagued 2009 Ice & Fire calendar may be the only one there ever is.

Why not do a fan calendar? Have fans do the artwork, vote on the 12 best = instant calendar!

Not to put words in grrm's mouth, but it seems the problem stems from the people producing the calendar, not the art.

They need someone to print/distribute/etc.

I sincerely hope that some other(reliable and professional) publisher steps in.

Again, thank you for all your involvement in trying to sort out the calendar mess for us costumers, you didn't have to, and it is really much appreciated.

To be fair, this is probably what would happen if one of your characters tried to make a calendar.

LOL! The Dabel Brothers would be invading New Mexico as we speak.

I have to respect your decision. Well, this year's will be a definite collector's edition! Thanks for all you did to get this year's to happen!

Time for a new, clean, slate. Good luck in the future!

How disappointing! I'm so sorry to hear this.

There is a company called Amber Lotus - they do lots of beautiful calendars... more along the woo-woo sort of thing. Think zen, fractals, etc. But they might be a good source for a new publisher! I regret I didn't get a 2009 and was all prepared for the 2010 edition.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear that but, after recent events, it is perhaps unsurprising.

Any chance of us seeing Michael Kaluta working on another SoI&F project in the future, perhaps the world book?

Sad news. I hope another publisher decides to give it a go.

I'll remain confident that somewhere somehow another calendar is made.

I'm glad you are no longer working with the Dabel Brothers. I finally received the 2009 Ice & Fire calendar I ordered from them. I only had to dispute my payment with PayPal in order to get them to send it. They also never answered any of my emails.

I think anyone who tried to buy anything from them recently can understand your decision. And we don't even need to know the details with Michael Kaluta to know his pulling out was probably warranted.

I'm sad for this notice...

I have a question, i not understand this part of your message:

I have reached the end of my patience as well. I have instructed my agent to ask the Dabel Brothers for an immediate termination of our contract.

This is valid only for calendar i hope, not for comics etc...really?

That's disappointing, but absolutely understandable. Here's hoping that, in the future, another calander can be made, but if not, oh well! The first was lovely.

Still haven't gotten mine for 2009 and 2009 is 1/3 over. That was the worst $60 US I have ever spent.

If you paid through PayPal, go dispute the payment if it hasn't been too long. I got mine 8 days after I escalated my claim to a dispute.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
