The Beans Are Spilled

Well, the first two beans, anyway. There will be many more beans to come.

But HBO has signed a director for the GAME OF THRONES pilot, and the first cast member has come aboard as well.

The pilot will be helmed by Tom McCarthy, director of THE VISITOR and THE STATION AGENT.

And playing Tyrion Lannister will be Peter Dinklage, who was almost everyone's "dream casting" for the role (he certainly was mine):

You can read more details in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, which broke the news this morning:

I'm thrilled.

Things are starting to move a lot faster now. The rest of the year is going to be exciting!

wondrous things can be done with make up and prosthetics these days. I'm certainly not worried. Now I'm just waiting to see who else is cast for this wonderful show.

And yes I'm going to get HBO just for it.

Great News!!!!
Indeed these are good news. I don't know a lot about Tom McCarthy, but I have seen "The Visitor" and thoroughly enjoyed it . Actually it was one of the stand-out movies last year, and last year was horrible in terms of quality movie releases.

As for Peter Dinklage, this is indeed a coup for this project. Dinklage is a excellent actor, a very cerebral one, with a natural talent for the craft. I have not seen "The Station Agent", but I will soon, thus my only reference with his acting is the prematurely cancelled show "Threshold". What I saw in that series I liked very much. He is so mature, yet self-deprecating, smart, yet prone to the most basic mistakes, singularly focussed and ambitious, but also a bit of an egomaniac with a tinge of narcissism. The range and contrast he displayed on that series was awe inspiring, and we're talking here of network tv. I can't wait to see what he'll do on HBO were most restraints and limitations will be gone!

Congratulations to you, and I await further news. Until then, all the best and stay well!

It looks I need to subscribe to HBO now. What else is a Fire and Ice groupie to do.

WOW, so looking forward to this pilot! Really exciting news.

I hope, HBO will give it the most serious Rome-nesque treatment, with atmosphere and all.

This news is just so wonderful to end a day with! Now I can go to sleep in a good mood :)

I JUST finished A Feast for Crows. I am beyond excited about this series. Part way through the second book, I read a review of the series on Pajiba.com that likened the scope and complexity of it to another HBO show, The Wire. My hopes are high for this being done justice on the small screen.

Great news! Will be interesting to see as the rest of the beans start spilling out.

Repost for fail.

He was totally my number one choice for Tyrion!

Thank you for the casting update!

I worked for the company that repped the Dinklage film The Station Agent. We gave out beef jerky at festivals. He is such a good pick because he has already demonstrated his ability to encapsulate Tyrion's humor, wit and sadness.

Such an awesome choice. And Tyrion can be fair of face on the tv show. It is, after all, TV. Everyone is pretty! I can't wait to see the other casting choices. Whee!

So when is filming starting?
I have a bunch of SCA/Rennfaire types going to Ireland on vacation this summer (July) that would jump at a chance to become extras.

Re: So when is filming starting?
October in Belfast, so it looks like you may be out of luck :-(

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
