The Beans Are Spilled

Well, the first two beans, anyway. There will be many more beans to come.

But HBO has signed a director for the GAME OF THRONES pilot, and the first cast member has come aboard as well.

The pilot will be helmed by Tom McCarthy, director of THE VISITOR and THE STATION AGENT.

And playing Tyrion Lannister will be Peter Dinklage, who was almost everyone's "dream casting" for the role (he certainly was mine):

You can read more details in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, which broke the news this morning:

I'm thrilled.

Things are starting to move a lot faster now. The rest of the year is going to be exciting!

I'm so excited for this! HBO is the only network I would ever trust to handle the source material. So good so far. ^_^

TYRION!!!!!
Wow... I had half an heartache reading the news.... I Imagined Tyrion in Dinklage's shape from the first chapter of this character. I'm also an actor and a dubber, and you can bet I'd sell my soul to give my voice to this guy in the italian version!!!!!!

I'm going to have to get HBO when this gets ready to air.

I'm so exciting. I hope the rest of the casting is as good. :)

DINKLAGE!!!!!!
I suspect like a lot of people I form pictures in my head of the characters as I read and then start playing "Who should be whom in the filmed version?" game...and with Tyrion, it was always Peter Dinklage. I'm so totally stoked that he's on board with it!

I agree with a lot of other commenters that Mr. Dinklage is just too...attractive without massive amounts of makeup. However, he's a fantastic actor and I'm sure HBO will do some makeup wonders.
As far as Mr. McCarthy goes, I can't help but think of his role in Good Night and Good Luck, which remains one of my favourite films of the past few years.
Well done HBO! I can't wait to see a pilot of this!

Also, as I'm in Ireland, please make an entry for the fans here for when you'll be here for filming! Buying George R.R. Martin a pint would be a story for the (nonexistent) grandkids.

YAY!!!! I'm not sure who the director is (but that's ok) but YAY for Peter Dinklage being Tyrion! I want to get HBO just to see this!

If the rest of the cast is half as talented and perfect for the role as Dinklage, this will be epic.

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
