The Beans Are Spilled

Well, the first two beans, anyway. There will be many more beans to come.

But HBO has signed a director for the GAME OF THRONES pilot, and the first cast member has come aboard as well.

The pilot will be helmed by Tom McCarthy, director of THE VISITOR and THE STATION AGENT.

And playing Tyrion Lannister will be Peter Dinklage, who was almost everyone's "dream casting" for the role (he certainly was mine):

You can read more details in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, which broke the news this morning:

I'm thrilled.

Things are starting to move a lot faster now. The rest of the year is going to be exciting!

Peter Dinklage is awesome, I'm already confident in their casting director. And I had no idea McCarthy was a director, I just remember him well from The Wire Season 5.

I missed Deadwood, but I think I will get HBO for this.
Dinklage is a great actor, and great choice!

I am WAY too excited about this.
I love HBO. I think they will do the series justice and would be the only ones who could.

Tom McCarthy & Peter Dinklage
I am so psyched to see you have Tom McCarthy directing & Peter Dinklage as Tyrion.
THE STATION AGENT is a favorite (OK, I'm from Northern NJ, so there is a bit of a bias there).
I am so glad that the wheels have gained traction and the momentum is beginning to build. This is great news. I am excited for you!

The news on Dinklage gave me goosebumps. I have renewed faith in the world of casting. :) Can't wait to see more!

Now there will finally be a reason for me to get something other than standard cable service, :)

Casting and Costume
Great start. One small worry is costume Mr. Dinklage is wearing. I have this recurring fear that the costume department will follow the dreadful BBC Robin Hood fantasy look instead of Mr. Martin's much more realistic desprictions of medieval dress in the books.

One can only hope this is not the final look for Tyrion.

The real world feal of Ice and Fire is an important element of the story. Could be spoiled by "Xena" costuming.

Re: Casting and Costume
That photo is from a stage production of Richard III Dinklage starred in, nothing to do with the HBO production.

Hmmmm... to each their own I suppose. I'm not nearly as excited about this being made into a mini series as most, simply because I know that television can never even come close to comparing to the written work. That aside, I suppose it will be good to expose a larger audience to your series, it (unlike some *cough* Twilight *cough*) deserves to have some recognition.

Ah well, I know I'll end up watching it. ^-^

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
