Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

SQUEEeee!

I don't care what my wife says, dammit - we're having SAUSAGE for dinner tonight!

Guess I'm going to have to hurry up and finish reading Frank Herbert's Dune series so I can start hassling my friend to give me back my copy of AGoT then start my 3rd reading of the series so far. Don't worry; I'll refuse to lend him the rest, so he'll be forced to buy them all for himself - he can't help but get hooked like me...

"...If he's grumpy it might led to killing off a favorite character."

I would expect nothing less, grumpy or no - shocking off-screen favourite character deaths are among the highlights of the series, after all!

Keep it up, take your time - we can wait as long as it takes

That Knot...
You know, if you can't find the perfect solution to the knot in this volume, you could always add another book and deal with it elegantly there...

:runs from the lynch mob of other fans.

In all seriousness, with your track record for writing twists and turns, we all have the highest confidence you'll bring us something surprising and satisfying out of your knot.

The Knot again...
...that's exactly what I started to feel when I read the excerpt from the Dany chapter you posted. Writing a frustrating situation can, what else, make you feel frustration! The whole bit you gave us just drips with it.

Keep it up, yo.

Take your time!
It's good to hear this news. I believe most people will want a good book in their hand that was done with thought then something crappy that was done with harsh.

Love you GRRM
although I am anxious to read DANCE, I am more than willing to wait however long necessary. I know the finished product will only be better for the wait. I would rather read something great later than something bad today. Thanks a lot GRRM

I think anyone who is a writer...even for fun..can understand the kinds of superstitious juju that you can have when you're working on something.

We're all rooting for you!

Semana Negra
Hi, mr. Martin I've recently discovered A Song of Ice and fire and... wow, I know that everyone would say this [and this], but... They are like the best books I've ever read, I recommend them to everybody and they say the same! They're great!

By the way... I wanted to ask you if you're coming to the Semana Negra in Gijón this year. I live there and I would be really excited if you came! :)

Thank you for reading this comment!

It's wonderful that you are feeling excited about it! I know how good it can feel to push through a difficult problem and get something satisfying out the other side. For me it's usually software...

I hope things continue...hopefully the Meereenese knot will part to your Valyrian Steel Pen :)

Hopefully solving the Meereeneese Knot won't force Dany to employ the sharp edge of a sword...

Excellent to hear about the progress. A good day's work is a happy thing. :)

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
