Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

Nice Job!
Keep up the good work, then!

I'm knee deep in the skin trade- I found an old paperback at a local library sale. Pretty cool so far.

By the way, I wonder if that light at the end of the tunnel refers to Dance specifically, or the entire Song...oh well...hope you are happy with the writing! I am!

Dance with Dragons
That's great news!

I can't wait, it's going to be great.

Your posts on writing remind me of Stephen King's forward in The Stand.

"When asked, 'How do you write?' I invariably answer, 'One word at a time,' and the answer is invariably dismissed. But that is all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Do your thing, enjoy the process as much as you can. Your true fans will be ready when the book's published.

Thank you
Awesome to hear you are excited. I am anxiously awaiting this latest installment and am delighted to share your enthusiasm. Take care and keep at it. Also, if you make it to Florida before the end of the year, I would love to meet you in person at a book signing or some such event.

(imagine 51-year old white guy with no discernible sense of rhythm tap-dancing, badly)

Shappadapap, shappadapap, shappadapap, SHAP!

Wow, everyone kind of came out of the wood-work on that one. No surprise really. I'll go find my well-worn copy of _A Game of Thrones_ and start my re-read.

Hooray!
Not to jinx you, of course, but I must add my own "CONGRATULATIONS!!!!" to the pile. I'm glad you're still producing quality work. We're all eager to see what aDwD has to offer, of course, but thank you for making it the best it can be.

Once again, fantastic, and keep up the great work!

I wouldn't worry about the bad days.
Frankly, I've 'eaten' pretty much a taste of most of the sausages around - yours is some of the finest so I wouldn't be too concerned!

hey georgie boy, i'm the same thing. even though i don't write crap. anymore.

i wish you luck, what that may entail is up to you. hope you post more of the writing process though, even though it is very true about the aspect of it being ze sausage and all. the more you mewl about the process the less you do it, and all that zany intricacies of the unbidden rules of the jinx.

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
