Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

Sausages for all of my friends!
And there's more for you when you finish the book.

Kudos to you on a good day, we all need those! Just had to comment because this has got me all excited, can't wait to get some fresh sausage, as it were... (by the way, new to your journal, ended up here after reading a post by Neil Gaiman to a reader about how "George R. R. Martin is not your bitch" - hilarious).

Rock on, sir.

Yay! I can't wait!

I'm both thrilled to be getting closer to find out what's happening with Daenerys and Jon and Tyrion, but also terrified of having more nightmares about Melisandre!!!

Glad you're optimistic. You should be - what you write is Not Crap! :)

Great News
I'm not your typical fan, 50 year old mother of 4, grandmother of 5. I'm new to the fantasy genre. My son recommended your series.

I listen to your books while I work. They are amazing. I now on my second time through. I love how I can hate a character in one book, then they become one of my favorite POV in another book.

Im also very excited for the HBO series.

Thank you!

That's great news!! Thanks for the update.

Stoked with your progress.
I am overjoyed that you are happy with your progress George. I will admit that I was extremely disappointed when I breezed through the first part of the series and ADWD was done ready for my continuance. The wait has become part of the magic though.

It's a relief to know that you care so much about the quality of your work that self committed sabotage(self inflicted deadlines) seems to be completely out of the question for you.

I'm sure you have much better things to do than to read more of my babbling. Keep up the great work.

And on a side note, the covers you have shown have me ecstatic, whether they are subject to change or not.

I hope you continue to have success in your writings. I've enjoyed everything I've read of your works, and, IMO, there are enough of them out there for us to enjoy that we fans can be patient. At the end of the day, what matters if the books and stories, not when they were published.

May you continue to find the words you seek.

Dragons and Sausage
You should not be making sausage, but hiding it? Have fun, George!

Good Luck, GRRM! Keep plugging away.

...also, have you ever sat back and read over your earlier blog entries? Its like a time capsule sort of stuck on fast forward... watch the Giants stumble for a year or two (You actually wrote that Tom Coughlin should be fired! haha, its in writing! u can't deny it! and if you erase it out of shame, then shame on you, GRRM!), and eventually succeed. There are entries that are heartbreaking (Gus) and entries that produce epic comment trails lasting six-months (like 'Freedom': http://grrm.livejournal.com/6138.html ). Interesting stuff for something that's supposed to be Not a Blog, at least from this POV.

Never look back, someone might be gaining on you.

Awesome! Time to celebrate!
Jun. 28th, 2009 04:56 am (UTC)
My heart rate just went up! :D

Hurray! I'm glad you're continuing to make progress on your epic project. I know it can't be easy, if for no other reason than I think you have very high standards for yourself. I don't envy you of the task of trying to please yourself, your publishers, AND your fans so I hope that by just pleasing yourself the rest of us will still be left happy. I look forward to holding the finished product in my hands and not being able to put it down until I've finished it.

Great News!
That's great George! I can't wait to hold Dance With Dragons in my hands, lock the door, take the phone off the hook and not surface until I have finished!

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
