Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

Thanks for the update!

Take your time.
I don't care if it's 5 months or 5 years before the next book comes out, just so long as it is done right. I just wanted to let you know what an impact your books have had on my life. My brother recently passed away from a long bout with cancer, and my sister-in-law and I spent his last month and a half in the hospital with him. I stayed up on the recliner next to him when my sister-in-law needed breaks to sleep, and I got back into reading when I needed quiet ways to occupy my time.

I grew so absorbed in the books I was churning them out one book every five days, and they were a welcome distraction from the harsh reality of my brothers slow and painful death. Sometimes he'd ask me if the book was good, and I'd describe the events occurring in the books when he'd get bored.

I've been slowly re-reading the series since then, especially since I missed out on so many details, and I've come to realize that your books are the best thing I've read in a long time, thank you so much for them!

Excellent news, ser. Glad to hear it.

I will be really happy when I see the date release ... or no! The book in my own hands!

I adore your work, and totally understand what you mean about re-reading chapters you've written and re-written and making sure that they're perfect. I can't wait for the next book. It's going to be awesome.

Keep On Keepin' On!
Good news! I wish you all the best and may you have many more days such as these, productive and happy. We shall be steadfast and await further developments on this front...

Good luck and continued inspiration and success!

I just finished up "A Feast for Crows" on my Kindle even though I knew there was a case of writers block waiting at the end of it ... I remember reading a review about no character being safe in Mr. Martins books and that anyone was liable to get the chopping block (literally). So when I finished up "Feast", I yelled, "Of course he has writers block!! He's killed practically everyone!!"
I will also admit to cursing Mr. Martin up one side and down the other every time someone I liked popped off.
Then again its a sign of a good writer when they draw you in that well ...

Please don't kill Jon! But it's ok if you kill Sansa. In fact, drop her off one of the mountains. On her head. She'd make a satisfying splat. And chop off Jaime's OTHER hand.

But you're not gonna listen are you? *sniff*

You do realize that people bug you is because you are a great writer--not joking on that part. Man, you are seriously good, in case no one has ever mentioned it to you.

Well... I'm excited!
Just wanted to say that I really love your books, and I'm sure it will be well worth the wait! I was just telling a friend this evening that I consider 'A Song of Ice and Fire' to be the epitome of high fantasy and excellent storytelling. I suppose that level of mastery doesn't happen over night. Keep up the good work! I'd rather read an excellent, well-thought out novel than a rush job with plot holes and loose ends. Good luck with untangling the snarl. =)

Dance With Dragons
You're killing me here George. I had never ever read a sci fi/fantasy book ever till you. Hated the genre altogether to tell you the truth :( But I love big books and on a search through Chapters I came across a huge book and thought....what the hey... will give it a try and lo and behold I fell in love!!!! The story lines are so strong that the fantasy part of it just didn't bother me at all, I couldn't stop....went and bought the whole series and read them back to back...couldn't get enough. So here I sit years later wishin and hopin...come on George. I know it must be a hard and long involved process and I can not claim to understand it...all I can tell ya is you're KILLIN me :)

Glad to read you are plowing through those chapters but how I wish I could see your Book in the Coming Soon listings :)

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
