Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

Sausage making? And, I always thought it was like having drunken sex in the dark.
So now we know what the real problem is, you're picky. Maybe we need to hire Parris to flog you to stop when SHE thinks it's good (or, stop flogging you whichever your preference.)
At any rate I know from your past posts how much progress in your projects means to you. Keep feeling good, OK?

As a long time fan, I must say that it is encouraging to hear something positive on this front. I have been one of your stalwart defenders to people who are displeased with your apparent lack of progress on the book. Explaining that writing at the level which you do isn't a serendipitous process but is a meticulous craft is usually enough. If they aren't convinced and press the issue, I remind them that A Song of Ice and Fire is your story to tell and you are entitled to tell it the way you see fit. Again, it is very encouraging to hear good news about A Dance With Dragons and I hope you are still as passionate about the story as your readers are.

::high five::

Well done Sir, and continued good luck to you.

It's good to see that things are working out for you. You shouldn't have to apologize for your writing practices unless it involves writing in a notebook while sitting in a van parked along two handicapped spaces.

Great news!
Good to hear that you're beating down those demons of the ol' Block. Keep sloggin' along; we're all behind you!

    All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

    Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

    Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

    At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

    Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
