Guarded Optimism

I almost hate to say anything here, for fear of jinxing it... but for what it's worth, the last six weeks or so have been the most productive period I've had on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS in... well... a year at least, maybe several. In the last three days I've completed three new chapters. Not from scratch, mind you, these were all chapters that had been partially written, and in some cases rewritten, for months if not years. But they're finally done, and I've just reread them, and I'm almost convinced that they're Not Crap.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Anyway, I know I don't talk about DANCE frequently here, and that's not going to change. Sorry, but I'm never going to be one of these writers who blogs daily about how many words they produced today. I don't like to talk about the good days for fear of jinxing myself (all writers are superstitious at heart, just like baseball players), and I don't like to talk about the bad days... well, just because. Writing is like sausage making in my view; you'll all be happier in the end if you just eat the final product without knowing what's gone into it.

But I am making a small exception now because... well, I'm feeling rather jazzed right now, and for the first time in a very long while, I think I can see a glimmering that might just be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Now if I can only slash through the Meereenese knot that I've been worrying at since 2005, I may actually start to get excited.

Let's hope that these were the troubling Bran chapters.

Best of luck on the knotty part. I drink to your happiness at being able to progress -- been there, done that, gave up in frustration and stitched the T-shirt together instead. Of course, I never had fans breathing down my neck. Calls for an extra drink, methinks.

Good luck. I know how you feel - I never talk about my work until I have a first draft done. I would much rather talk about what exists as opposed to what might be.

I don't usually comment on authors' blogs, out of awe (intimidation?) for their talent. But I will post to offer congratulations for you now!

If the writer's block-rastination or whatever it was comes back, I can offer my services as a lifecoach for free (or just for an autograph). Believe it or not, there are a few tested psychological techniques for beating the block. I had to learn them for myself at one point (Think a magnum opus is hard? Try writing a thesis! j/k) and now I help other people with motivation issues (among other things) on a crisis line. If you don't believe me, call a cognitive-behavioral therapist instead. Same techniques, higher co-pay :) Psychology is for more than just "crazy people," after all.

Anyway, good to see the block is in remission. Keep rockin out, one sentence at a time.

cool thing!

I'll just patiently wait until the final product is there. It takes the time it takes and if you're making good progress as of late - all the better.

cheers!

It's always nice to hear about overcoming obstacles, especially when it deals with the utter deliciousness that is your work. Congratulations.

Congratulations! What a great feeling that must be!

There must be something in the air, as the last few weeks have been MY most productive writing days in years as well--though mine is a dissertation, judged by a committee of four, rather than one of the most anticipated fiction novels out there!

Whatever it is for you, I hope it continues to motivate you--there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of knowing that you've been productive...and that the final product is definitively Not Crap! :)

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
